Solid State vs Conventional HDDs

Cheapest 120/125GB SSDs that anyone knows of?

Preferably G.Skill/OCZ/Intel if possible. Cheapest G.Skill I found was about R2250 incl. Any other suggestions with links please?

PS How does one order from a place like Newegg.com that doesn't typically ship to SA? Are there ways around this, but still maintaining the price point?

Hey man. What i would maybe do, depending on what your budget is, is buy 2x 60GB or 64GB and Raid0 them. I have been doing that and been getting great results. Double the performance with the same price(as a 120GB more or less) and same size. Do you have SATA3?
 
That depends on the type of Raid you are using
RAID 0 uses striping to write to both drives,so in other words you don't waste space and you use both drives to their fullest potential
RAID 1 uses Mirroring, that might be what you are thinking of in terms of wasting space as you would then only have the capacity of one of the drives but your information would be safe from a crash

If you use SSD in RAID 0, which is I think what Frank was getting at, you could increase performance form the stock speed of one SSD drive to the combined speed of both.
(This is slightly more complex in terms of data dropoff and write speeds but it would be faster than a single drive)

In terms of SSD in general though, you only really notice a diference in applications that use COnstant IO access, so stuff that is constantly writing to or reading from the Drive would benefit
Stuff like games would have a slightly faster loading speed but that's about it as the rest is not IO dependent

Got Sata three, but RAID to me has always seemed like a drastic waste of space.

Waste of space??? Raid0 you dont lose any space! if you have 2x64GB drives you double the speed and the space. So you will end up with 128GB space. If you use Raid1 then you lose a drives space.

I did say in my first reply that i was talking about Raid0 though. Its all good though.

Oh okay this is probably the case. I have not tried Raid1 except in my companies server cause my gaming rig has no info on it that i care about losing. All emails are on the exchange. Movies etc are all on externals and i can get those again if i have to lose a drive.

I found that in Raid setups, the actual RAID fails more than the actual drives.... I have seen RAID1 failing due to high IO to a disk, then we can rebuild the RAID on the same disk.

So Frank, have you ever had RAID failing on you without it being due to drive failure?
 
Yeah I don't reall see the need for home users to ever really be concerned about running anything in RAID 1

But if you look at it like that, If your 120GB fails you loose everything in any case. I hear that there is more of a chance of it failing but i have not had a problem yet. Touch wood.

What do you want pricing on? 60GB or 120GB?
 
Erm, if you 2x 1TB and the chance of one failing = the same as one 2TB, then when one of your 1TB drives fail, you lose data but still have a drive left; all the while having much better speeds.
 
SSD the single best upgrade I have ever done on my PC

You will not believe how it brings your PC alive, and I cannot explain it... You need to experience it for yourself!

It really boggles the mind

ADATA S511 120GB MLC SATA 6Gb/s SSD compared to the OCZ Vertex 3 or whatever it's called.

Opinions? Looking at maybe getting one of these?
