LulzSec hackers bring down Escapist Magazine

Seriously, why?!?

I can understand the whole Sony hacks (Not saying it's right, just saying it makes sense why it was hacked) but what is up with hacking random gaming sites?

I think it's safe to say that they have absolutely no interest in defending gamers' rights or even consumers' rights. They're criminals pure and simple. Find them, jail them and then show them to the world so that we might appreciate the poetic irony of caged birds.

I think they are addicted to the attention :(

It's sad to see so many sites and things lacking the proper security to combat their hacks

It's partly an ego thing, and then partly to show that any unprotected systems are vulnerable
System Admins that are complacent need to be taught a lesson in humility

Bloody hell. I hope they pay for this in the end. What's the point of it all?

And just as bad, why do they find it so easy to hack in everywhere? I hope Steam and XBox Live are both secure.

Well if Steam gets hacked atleast they claim to not keep credit card details. One must also remember that the hacker has more time than the administrator. They will always find a loophole to exploit.

Surely they will get caught out... You can't do anything on the internet without someone knowing what it is you are doing? or am I just paranoid? or is my service provider too involved?

Is twitter allowed to release their information? like if someone anonamously tweeted something along the lines of "I am going to blow up the world and this is how, I already have the tools at my disposal and here is the proof" and they gave proof, surely twitter would release their personal information to save the world from getting destroyed?

I believe so... reminds me of what happened to PigSpotter

Anyway, wouldn't it be funny if that lulzsec website were hacked? :p

Many have tried, and all of them failed. Mind you there was one attempt made that got about halfway, but no further than that since.

Nothing happened to PigSpotter. In fact, quite the opposite. He is selling T-shirts ffs!
The article you linked relates to a UK offender and their bobbies.
It merely goes on to mention from a prominent lawyer why such an endeavor (against PigSpotter) in SA would be fruitless.

You don't really think these guys would tweet if there was any chance they could get caught, do you?

This is the new front line. As things stand most countries have little to no real e-crime deterrents. Sure they focus on identity theft and such but soon these kind attacks are going to start costing companies millions (Sony may well have been the first) and these companies are going to turn to the law system and ask "Why aren't we protected, why can't you prosecute them." It wouldn't surprise me if we start seeing larger cities invest in better funded E-Crime units for the police.

While on this topic...

Has anyone ever visited the pirate bay's legal threats page?

Lol. Love that page....

I don't know. stranger things have happened. but these guys are making enemies fast. maybe one of the twitter employees would snoop and let slip a detail or two to their friends at Bethesda or something... could happen, no?

That would be the worst possible thing to ever happen in such a situation.
Basically, information obtained illegally. The whole case would get thrown out of court faster than a drunk dressed in nothing but doughnut-jam.
It's these little things that cause massive court cases to fall flat on their faces like a wobbly infant. Only this time there is no mommy to rub some Mercurochrome on and kiss it better.
