I remember reading this somewhere - can't remember where - but what a lot of people do is this (since your car needs to be roadworthied every year)

Get yourself a cheapie - apparently you can get a fairly decent car for a few hundred GBP. Drive that around for a year while putting some money away - at the end of the year, drop the cheapie off for sale, make most, if not all of your cash back, and get your next, slightly upgraded ride.

I used to work on a used car site for a UK client - I've seen late-model Ford Focuses go for the equivalent of about R70 - 80k.
