EA pulls recent games from Steam

It is also now confirmed that EA’s next big release, Alice: Madness Returns, won't be available on Steam.

Fancy that, guess what I'm not buying any more.

Like Hell am I using a publisher-exclusive digital distribution platform (and yes, ladies, I'm well-aware that was originally what Steam was as well, but it's safe to say it has evolved beyond that).

EA is one publisher I don't trust with anything centralised... Can you say "EA Download Manager?"

First - I lolled about the attempt to remove all the videos from Youtube. Seriously ... this is the internet.

Secondly - removing their games from Steam is a bit of a bum move - I suppose it will make support for those games a little easier, but this now forces users to adopt yet another distribution service - given recent events (hackings etc) I'd be more inclined to reduce my presence online, rather than sign up for extra services. Also, why do I want another service clogging up my resources. Of course, I could always quit the one before launching the other, but ...

I'd be surprised if EA doesn't get any backlash from users because of this decision.

You mean, like a boycott? :p

Yeah, we've seen how sterling and decisive gamers are about those:

"I HATE YOU FOR DOING THAT TO [insert game name here], I'LL NEVER SUPPORT YOU AGAIN, GO BURN IN HE .... Oooh ... [insert game name here] just release ... must buy *drool*"

No ... I'm sure there's just going to be a lot of whining and swearing and general unpleasantness before people go out and buy BF3 anyways - and I'm not even suggesting boycotting - but, I'm just a little less certain about actually buying BF3 now. That's all.

I play alot of ea games so i dont really mind using there services. Plus maybe it will make there games a bit cheaper, instead of paying valve money to sell there games.

If you consider the prices you pay for games on Steam - especially if you hit a special, you can see why that statement doesn't make any sense whatsoever.

R349.99 on Origin store. How is that any different?

Crysis 2 is R399.99

Sims 3 is still going for $40 on Steam, more than 3 years after release. If that isn't a foreboding of the kind of future prices we can expect on Origin, what is?

@shadowfox: On special after a year later...plus i buy games when they are new anyway. When steam started people where talking the same crap about how they wouldnt buy hl2 etc. Starcraft 2 has its battlenet , activision is trying to move people into Uplay and hon has there system in place to. I use all the systems and i like all of them.

Exactly why I questioned your statement.

If you buy games immediately after release, that's your thing - and its fair enough. However, I doubt prices on Origin are going to be any less than what you would pay for them via Steam. Some of the games are more expensive, some are less expensive - Dead Space 2 for instance - will set you back R100 more if you buy it through Origin. DAII will cost R8 less, but as soon as the US$ drops, we'll pay a few rands less.

Dead Space 2 and DAII - if memory serves me, are not a year old. And not on special either.

We can look for further dickery - Steam sells ME1 for $20 - Origin for R349.99. Rip off much?

I absolutely don't disagree with EA setting up a distribution system - they're free to do so, but I feel making the new games exclusive is a dick move on their part. I'm now forced to adopt a new distribution system in order to play their games, something I'm not happy with. I don't want to have to contend with 3 or 4 different systems to accommodate all the games I have on my machine.

Furthermore - comparing Steam now to Steam when they launched is like comparing a grape to a damn raisin. They're technically the same thing, but the one's a little juicier.

Hmmmm this has the potential to seriously backfire on EA. But I can understand where they are coming from with this. When you sell something, you want to make the most profit from each sale. So this is how they will approach it, trying to cut Valve with their magical Steam out of the loop.

But this might come back to bite them in the ass...

It already has. I wanted Alice, I now flat-out refuse to get Alice, therefore they've already lost one sale.

I get the feeling that I won't be the only one who turns my back on EA-published games if this is their idea of how to win customers over.

No, you won't be the only. A game is going to have to pretty fucking good before I'll even consider it.

I wonder what going to happen to the users that had bought games already from steam. Refunds? or moved over?

I love certain IP's that EA publish, but it is a bit worrying at how big this company is getting! I mean between Activision Blizzard and EA we gamers are gonna go through a bit of hell! Each one is trying to make gaming a subscription service, if that is the case then gaming will become VERY expensive!

Plus with all the new and upcoming devs getting swallowed up, I can see the creativity getting even more stifled :(!

Thank God we have SCEE and Naughty Dog!!
