I must confess I haven't been able to watch anime lately. Just been a bit of a mission for whatever reason. I've been keeping up to date with my Manga reading though. Hopefully I'll be able to expand my horizons a bit in the next few months with an easier way to read Manga for a change. There are so many anime shows that ended abruptly as well that I would like to have a more conclusive ending to. HSOD being one of those as well as school rumble.

I've got a vague feeling there might be more HSOD coming at some point in the future - I'd sort of prefer it if they toned down the fanservice a little bit.

I agree. The story is very good and I enjoy the serious nature of it (even if there was a bit of R rated stuff) but the fanservice takes away a little bit of the edge almost.

Looool but that makes it fun to watch for us single guys :p

Man then just grab some proper hentai instead :D

It loses the appeal when they are fully nude. I like wondering whats under there clothes. Its fun :p

I honestly don't mind fanservice that much - to be honest - when I first started watching anime Evangelion shocked me a little because there were actual nude scenes. Then I started getting some exposure - you had series like Girls Bravo which was a bit over the top, but it wasn't prevalent yet. Then there were series like Shuffle! where you had the odd panty-shot, or cleavage - and the one girl (Primula I think) had one nude appearance.

Now - it's everywhere, and it loses it's impact if it's just there for the sake of being there. Seikon no Qwaser is still one of the worst series I've seen that did this.

Hi, so like, I want to get into watching some anime - purely because I've never tried it before. Only ever done Pokemon, Digimon and Dragon Ball Z for nostalgia, but I want to try something with a more mature story. I have no clue where to start though. After doing some research I kept seeing Naruto, Bleach and Death Note but they all seem quite childish tbh. So can anyone recommend something?

Death note is a good must see. You should also try Gantz (anime), Elven lied, Fullmetal Alchemist and Code Geass. I cannot forget Berserk.

You would see them everywhere - they are arguably the most popular series out there at the moment - although in my honest opinion I think it's time Naruto and Bleach get retired, since both those series are getting on my nerves - and probably stopping a lot of people from getting into anime - because anime get's pigeon-holed into the "oh, its a lot of fighting and power-ups etc" trap.

The series BlaZing mentioned are all pretty good ones - Death Note is actually very far away from childish, and worth a watch. Other than that, suggestions can vary greatly depending on what your preferred genre would be - action, comedy, romance, sci-fi, drama, suspense etc etc.

There's almost no limit to the number of series available.

If I wanted to try and get someone into anime now I'd start with something like FMA: Brotherhood, it has a great story, the animation is fantastic and it is a combination of most anime themes (visual/acted humour, grittiness, horror, fighting scenes). A sort of combination of everything that anime is.

If I had to suggest something more mainstream I'd go with One Piece (IMHO better than Bleach/Naruto) or maybe Fairy Tail (tho I'm not really enjoying this latest arc but it gets better).

If they can enjoy that then I'll start specializing. Some FLCL, Trigun, Elfen Lied, Samurai Champloo, Full Metal Panic, Cowboy Bebop, Last Exile (freakin awesome anime this), Rurouni Kenshin, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Chobits (PANTSU!!!!), Hellsing, Berserk, etc. etc.

However...... never in my life will I EVER recommend NGE......... Hideaki Anno can go dry hump a cactus for all I care.

There's a Last Exile spin-off coming out in ... October I think it is. Looking forward to that ... and I hope they keep the same standard of animation - the battle scenes in Last Exile blew me away - literally.

With regards to NGE - well ... I definitely wouldn't recommend it for someone new to anime, but I do think it's worth a watch. Although I say that - NGE was the second or third anime series I watched - complete and utter brain-f**k.

Awesome, will keep my eye out for that one. :)

I see you have a Blood+ quote in your sig. What was your thoughts on it?

Pure random chance, that :p My sig is autogenerated - the quotes and the chibis change as my time spent and anime eps total changes.

That being said - I really did enjoy it. It's rare that I'll actually sit through a 50 episode anime more than once, yet Blood+ has received the treatment. They did a great job overall with story, plot and character development, BGM was damn good and I loved the character designs and animation as well.

I'm still looking at doing a full review at some point, I've just been a little lazy lately.

I guess that would be SF/Fantasy/Drama. And when I say Fantasy I don't mean the generic good vs evil + magic + destiny formula. Anything with a deep story is something I'd watch though. But yeah looks like I'll give Death Note a try then.

So, Black Lagoon comes to a close. With the Final OVA (episode 29 "Codename Paradise, Status MIA") was pretty "Meh" at the end IMO. Was hoping for more but anyway.

I'm just waiting for Hellsing Ultimate to come out now, it's been released on Blu Ray in Japan but no US release yet for me to import.

Would add Tengen Toppa, Gundam Unicorn, Gundam 00, Hellsing Ultimate, Baka No Test (Have not met a soul that did not laugh at the jokes they made) Ghost Hunt, Katanagatari (very drawn out sometimes with long periods of speaking but worth it in the end) Fate/Stay Night, Claymore, Darker than BLACK... just to mention a few of my favorites :)

OH! Durarara!! and Bacanno! are also on my "you must watch list"

Would also say D.Gray-man as a good Shonen style show. (sucks that they ended it)
