I dont know how many of you know about this, just recently i visited JHB and saw this implementation of it beggining, with those overhead white things that catch your numberplate or something, just today i saw an article on this:

http://www.news24.com/SouthAfrica/Politics/Tolls-AA-warns-of-disgruntled-motorists-20110811

This is probably the biggest F$#k up to come for the country, whilst i stay in Cape Town, its only a matter of time till it comes here too...

Thoughts on this peeps? I do suggest motorists in JHB do not pay nor register for ETags.
Read the article, very interesting indeed....

ITs totally bs. This is why I hate governments. They are sucking all of us dry.

I thought they where here to make our lives easier. Nope they just make it harder.
The toll won't even go to the roads its going to go into their pockets.

Idiotic, they should cancel the road levy in the fuel costs then. They basically double charging us now.

Added to that I've got fucking genius chemical engineers here who say it won't effect them because they will take the back roads. Now if they plan on charging the trucks that deliver everything to the shops R2/Km how can you say it won't effect you?

Yip. But people are letting the governments do what they want.

Exactly, though, taking back roads etc will damage the business sector too, but you guys should not pay! Its sad, it seems that things are getting worse everyday and that this country will be like every other African country.....

This will fail, people will not pay for this.
So I'm not bothered about it. Besides there are backroads. Just don't use the highway unless you absolutly have to.

Well effectively they have gotten rid of the most vocal and destructive source, the taxi's.

The taxi's will get to go through for FREE

But its like this all over the world. I think its hard times ahead for everyone in the world.

I drive plenty everyday and I have to be honest, I almost never see taxi's on the highway.

How does this relate to 'every other African country'. I understand and share the frustration regarding the toll fees, but I think you are taking your analogy to far?

Taxis transport the poorest of the poor, so I can understand why that was done.

Of course, I understand it too.

I just feel with all these extra taxes they will start over presurising the middle class.

Agree, the middle class is being badly squeezed. If you think about it a toll system is a 'pay to use model' which is probably the most equitable method of charging people BUT the fuel levy is already there i.e. as someone already said we are being double taxed.

Fivel, before this becomes a Race issue or a political one, let me rather shoot it down now

I refer to "every other African country" by simply referencing to history itself, where should i start?

Somalia, Zimbabwe, Congo, Rwanda? Why is it that African countries are so poor today with thousands starving? It comes down to who Governs what, or lack thereof, i don't care if a white/black/purple/green person Governs a country, the fact is you do it properly! Instead of taking enough money to retire and go into exile.

It call like it is, fact Africa does not have an excellent track record, TIA as you may have heard....

They are privately run businesses, who may very well not be paying tax to begin with. If they were municipal busses I would understand.

I doubt very strongly that anyone (relatively/significantly speaking) who uses a taxi has their own transport to begin with, so unlike car pooling where you CHOOSE to share a vehicle with 14 others the taxi's aren't subsidising 14 other cars.

Furthermore, if 14 people share the R1/km costs that a minibus would have to pay it's still only 7.1c p/km each.

They use the road a lot more and with a lot more mass per square cm pressure exerted on the tarmac.

Relax, I wasn't thinking race etc at all. What I do disagree with you is that this is now another example of how we are sliding into another Zimbabwe etc. That's simply not true.

The idea behind tolls is to provide a way to support the infrastructure we demand from the government, so the concept is sound, the implementation is problematic. We all want better this and better that, somehow this needs to be paid for.

I hear you and would agree if there was a sound public transport system that all could use.

Big picture people. These infrastructure cost have already been incurred. Sunk cost...done deal. The only people who pay for infrastructure are the taxpayer either directly [tolls] or indirectly [taxes]....there is literally nobody else. Most car owners happen to be taxpayers & vice versa, so this will hit middle income households the hardest (As usual in SA). Sure a few taxis will pay too, but it'll make up a negligible portion.

On balance AA has it wrong. If the funding is toll heavy & budget light then the actually users make up a bigger portion. So arguably it is fairer this way.

Effectively there is no point in arguing over this. The only scope for a real win here is to make sure that only costs are recovered & no massive profits are made...cause unlike the costs those profits have not been incurred yet & can still be controlled.

Fivel, with all due respect I'm tired of support 5+ brothers on my pay cheque I work for. Now I must pay toll and added NHI tax. How am I suppose to do that ?

Tired of the governments continues looting of our earn money just to go and piss it out on champagne, whores, cars etc etc.

I've never pictured myself as the anarchist, but I am there now. It's under my skin and I feel quite ready to go and do some due cleansing of the unclean currently in power.

We are about 3 or 4 to 10 ( of so many ) that pay taxed the rest are just free loaders and looters. I'm tired, I'm stretched out, I don't even have a tv in my house, in fact I don't even have a house I have to rent a small place due to just being unable at the moment to buy one and I don't think I will be in near future with current looting of my funds.

I can only see one outcome here. removal by force, because those idiots seriously isn't there for our good. So fedup I could even put on an awb and gladly go and kill a few fuckers.

I'm finished.

That's how I feel.

:edit
It's not only about us the car users, but what do you think prices of food is going to be next month if they implement it right now? even of 100000000000 people share one car it's still not going to help with that.
