Need some help please?

My gf's mom wants to buy a new laptop for about R5000.

I found one for R4999, it's an acer travelmate TM5742:
Intel i3 380M
2GB ram
320 GB
15.6GB
Windows 7 Pro 32bit

Do you guys have any other suggestions?

What the laptop will be used for is of great importance when deciding on a laptop to buy. If you know what it will be used for, certain specs become irrelevant e.g. if she'll be using it for browsing the internet, looking at emails, using some Microsoft Office applications, etc. then she definitely doesn't need 3-4GB RAM in her laptop, and the processor doesn't need to be super fast. So if you find out what she'll be using it for that'll help people to give recommendations. Just a thought.

Right, that's the first thing I ask when someone requests a recommendation.

She'll be using it mostly for games music and video's. But not you high end games like call of duty, more in the line of the csi series, those shit mystery games where you need to find the objects etc, I think the most hardware dependent game she'll play will probably be warcraft! LOL

You should look at the Available Samsung range as well. My sister recently bought one. I will find out the website name from her. It was R5999 though but has great specs:

Intel Core I5 2.0 Ghz
Nvidia 256Mb dedicated graphics card
2 GB RAM
Full keyboard
Win7 Pro
320GB HDD

If this price is not to high I can get all the details from her by emailing if you like?

lol Im not gonna get into a debate about this. So you're telling me 2 gig is more than enough to run on a laptop using win7 64bit? Epic, then I'm telling Old Mutual to take out the extra 2 gigs we had put into the 3000 Dell laptops, because they only use it to read emails and work on word and excel, yet we got complaints that the laptops were slow, Oh and they have ssd's and core i5 Dell laptops, so the wekest link in the setup was the ram.

Agreed, I'm definitely going to look at atleast 3Gb, so far I'm leaning to the samsung r-series.

RAM is lank cheap nowadays, especially compared to CPU's and stuff, so go for as much as you can even if it's an overkill. It won't make a huge impact on the price. Even if a laptop only comes with 2GB, you can usually pay a little extra to bump it up to 4GB. Also consider what version of Windows it comes with. Avoid Vista, I think some might still be coming with that. Then Windows 7, obviously 64 bit is better than 32 bit, and if you want to join a domain or anything, don't get the Home edition

Yeah they are best bang for buck I reckon.
and the R series does look nice, also haven't read any horror stories about them.

My gf's mom recently bought a laptop for about that in price... A gigabyte somethingoranother. I'll get back to you on model and so on but I was impressed with the specs. Good bang for her bucks :)

Here are the details. It is what I would recommend. I can (probably) pull some strings and get this for you at this price from Rectron...

GIGABYTE Q1585N Corei5/4GB RAM/500GB/GT335/BT/WIN7PRO
R4595.00

Will come with two year warranty. If you want onsite warranty, stick on another +-R600.

Let me know if you want me to pursue this :) it is a very nice, speedy laptop. Solid feel. Not ugly. Not gorgeous...

http://rebeltech.co.za/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=122_222&products_id=6214 that is it on Rebeltech... but with less RAM and more price.

I do indeed. Will just have to make a call or two :) Can't imagine it has gone up in price over the last month :/ I'll look into it later and let you know.
