Industry doesn't know what girl gamers want, says female developer

Yep most girls I know who game, between the lot of us we play all kinds of genre's and really have no issue about the games that are being released. MY gripe is in general how some guys just assume we all prefer playing silly games and refuse to take us seriously.

And seriosuly maybe I am one of a few that doesnt mind play the games whether its got female chars in there or not. But please for the love of all things good and gaming fun, dont make it a whole sexist thing. So what if the games have girls with big boobs and loads of eye candy for the guys (if the girls havent realised it by now - if your playing the game as a male char - you get to look at a guys ass all day long - feck I miss the days of college where we used to stare at guys in those lovely navy dress whites with pants a size to small - Im sure its a regulation of some sort - all guys in uniform has to have a nice ass!)

Why people always have to make an issue out of the fact that males/females play games I still dont know. Its one of those pet peeves I have - especially towards women who wants to be treated like equals but still blame gender inequality for everything!

I see this must be why 95% of my mmo characters are female. I really really only play male if it's of some significance so to say. FEMSHEP FTW !
 
have to echo what's been said, if you a gamer at heart it shouldn't matter your gender.
Gamers (guys and gals) have various tastes in gaming, so if you are a female gamer, the exact same thing applies. Same goes for more hardcore / casual gamers. There's a market of females out there that don't play games or it doesn't appeal to them, same goes for guys who don't play games or it doesn't appeal to them.

I could see a really good story/adventure game having a place to attract more gamers into the scene, but I would apply that to both males and females that haven't gotten into the whole gaming scene yet.
 
Well the genre will differ for girls just as much as it does for us guys. They're also human and ja what ever they decide is entirely up to them. If you had a game dev company with just girls, I can assure you that games would still be the same, probably just with a lot less violence in them, and more detail considering girls are more artist than most guys, so detail would be more of a key point that everything is focused on. :)

Hahahaha see all my mmo chars are female, but when I used to play quake, UT and those games it had to be a male char :P

Maybe the programming ladies should get cracking at writing games they want , sell it on steam to show a supporter base and perhaps other companies can go from there ?!

is about there not being a genre for something that is yet to be invented.

Look at DOTA , one simple map and it spawned HON and LOL and DOTA2 and more to come.

Is there a gap in the market place ? Yes !
Am I a girly girl to know what you want ? No ! I cant even understand what my fiance wants half the time.

You ladies crack out the programming manuals and show us what you want.
Invent the "missing" genre.

You must love Metal Gear Solid then. Why oh why must those pants be so tight, and when he does his sneaking manoeuvre, it just looks so wrong...
 
The comments on the article are just a lol,

but yea with re to mmo's it depends greatly, my assasins (<--- see what i did there) sorc, ok pretty much every class except a tank is a chick, and re to FPS's where u can choose female characters the way to go, think mine started on Q3A
 
No one has mentioned the Nintendo Wii. Maybe it's not so much about the games themselves but how we interact with the games. It's the only time i've had my girlfriend jamming for more than ten minutes. Also the kinect, i had a female colleague who said the kinect was the best thing to happen to her husband's xbox and now she was able to play with him... and not have to handle his joystick :)

i like most games, but what i play mostly depends on my moods. Some days i like shooting at things other days i like driving over things and on other occassions i like building stuff.
i also dont see why there has to be a genre just for girls.... cant we all just play along?

one thing i would however like to see in games is more customisation... i like changing things or making my characters look unique.
 
Girls like the genres of games that already exist. Even steorotypical male genres such as fps and horror games. Its not about gender, but about taste.
Also a girl friend of mine who doesnt really play games, except The Sims mostly, loved watching me play Uncharted 2 because ''it's just like a movie'' the story is what attracts her and some other girl friends of mine too, and even a guy friend who prefers shooters. If there is something missing for girls in games, its a decent story. There's no need for a female specific game or genre.
 
I hope Tarryn reads this whole thread, always a surprise when instead of a war, peace breaks out and everyone shows their logical side :D

I was reporting a bit of industry news. It wasn't really an opinion article.

My point, however, is that this idea that such a thing as a "girl game" needs to be developed is retarded. Different people like different stuff, and it's not a matter of sex, but a matter of personal preferences. The real issue is overcoming the perception that gaming is more of a guy thing, but I think we're getting there already.

My girl only enjoys games we can play co-op and enjoy together :p it gives her a chance to become involved in my gaming :P

Currently busy with Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light.
