Deus Ex Rant (Because I can >:3)

Finished DX:HR early this morning. Incredibly enjoyable gameplay, interesting story and beautiful visuals.

There may be (light) spoilers.

Gameplay is entirely non-linear (multiple solutions to missions) which is fantastic and gives an excellent incentive to stealth characters to explore and find different solutions.

The narrative (story) however, I found blatantly linear. There doesn't seem to be any tangible choices or consequences that affect future events or the conclusion of the story. In fact, the way the "Push a button to decide your ending" bit was just utterly lolwtf-worthy and majorly disappointing. Even then, I think it would be more accurate to say that it's more of a Button-of Profundity (trademark pending) than a conclusion or proper ending to the game.

I also miss the small things, like little robots cleaning; the little atmospheric details that make you feel like wow, I would never have thought of that.

Also, some of the augmentations are really just pointless/stupid, whereas others are all but vital for some of the boss-fights. I love cloaking and doing non-lethal take-downs, but find it utterly frustrating that only ONE battery charges and then you have to nom chocolates to keep going. The very idea of it is amusing (cloak > nom chocolate > take-down an enemy > nom choccie > take down another > repeat) and feels like Popeye gone cyborg.

Regarding the boss-fights, I can't help but feel that they take a lot out of the immersion. Specifically in that you level your character a certain way (let's say a stealth/cloak/non-lethal build) but then you get into a boss-fight which forces your character to play in a different way--can't take down, because they kill you if you get too close, can't tranq/stun/neutralise them for whatever reason, so you have to kill them.

The way the game ended also just leaves a lot to be desired, it's like the story just suddenly took an epic change just for the hell of it (can you say Left 4 Dead zombies meets augs?).

I would've liked to delve deeper into the conspiracy theories, the different organisations, see inside them and sort of deepen the mysteries.

Also, the AI. In the first game an AI was still very much something that shouldn't be unleashed or exist because of all the dangers it represents so finding one was a MAJOR "oooh... aaaaah..." kind of event where you knew you were dealing with major moral and ethical questions. However, in DE:HR, you stumble on an AI and it's like, "Oh, yeah, this shit happens all the time."

All-in-all, it's a game I felt was a brilliant successor to Deus Ex but at the same time, the narrative falls short of the otherwise BRILLIANT gameplay. I feel the narrative really lets it down.

I am not suprised you finished it already.. coz usually when i went to bed (11:30-12:00) there would be nice popup saying "Lycanthrope is now playing deus ex" :) i have not played this game yet.. but il prob get it in the near future... :)

Yeah, I had a tough time putting this one down and had a couple of late nights that saw the sun rise :D

I do love it, I think it's a fantastic game but there are just a couple of rough spots that I don't quite think were as seamless or as immersive (or even as balanced for different play styles) as they could've been and the lack of a really non-linear narrative with far-reaching consequences/effects bugs me. But I'm a natural critic :o

Considering this is (apparently) this developer's first big game (according to the making of doccie), I think they did bloody brilliantly and we can expect great things from them.

I most definitely hope they work on the next Deus Ex game and, of course, that there will be another!

I agree with most of your points (I haven't completed the game as yet). My biggest gripe are the bosses, because I focused on stealth I found the boss fights to be insanely hard. Luckily at one point I had enough praxis points saved up to upgrade my armor otherwise it would have been near impossible.

+1 on the batteries not charging all the way. I almost feel like I'm being punished for focusing on stealth at some points.

Regardless, this is a fantastic game and I can't wait to uncover the next conspiracy. :)

Use the Typhoon augment. Kills bosses in one shot (two at most). Saves you a lot of grief but again, totally says that you HAVE to level your character in a certain way which completely contradicts the very concept of non-linear approaches to different situations.

I also went stealth which means that I sacrificed armour and combat for cloaking, batteries, hacking and went for take-downs when confronting enemies. The fact that it forced me to use combat in boss-fights was really, really disappointing.

See, one thing that I don't like is when there are differing rules for NPCs and the player. For example, you can sneak up to and take-down almost all characters, except these three? They are somehow superior to you? Immune to non-lethal weaponry (for all intents and purposes)? Also, later on, the second boss can cloak for what feels like a good amount of time (30-seconds?) after every three typhoon attacks. Does that mean she has a fuckload of choccies on her to keep recharging her batteries, or is she different to us and the rules that govern us don't govern her?

I don't like that. However, I love that we stand as much of a chance of being easily killed as NPCs do, fantastic! :3

It just felt like they decided that whatever way you levelled your character didn't matter and that there was only ONE way to deal with these guys and that was combat.

+1 on the batteries not charging all the way. I almost feel like I'm being punished for focusing on stealth at some points.

Exactly. I put quite a bit of thought into this and can't possibly see how or WHY all your batteries don't simply all recharge. It's not like it would make it THAT much easier and it would make being a stealth/cloak character a lot more useful. You can see that they put effort into the take-down animations when you're cloaked and it looks awesome when you decloak, beat the snot out of 'em and cloak again, hurry over to the next poor sod and repeat the process before you run out of energy. If all your batteries recharged, you could just hide out for a bit, there'd be a point to buying more batteries and spending praxis on the battery recharge upgrades.

You said it best, it really feels like they punish you for it because it really feels like a waste of praxis.

Regardless, this is a fantastic game and I can't wait to uncover the next conspiracy. :)

Indeed. I kind of feel like there were too few conspiracies though and they never delved deep enough into any of them. For example Adam's heritage, I want to know MORE. The Illuminati? I want to know MORE. The AI and her origins? I want to know MORE! It's really like they just said, "Here are these things, they're interesting, eh? Well, they're background noise to this story."

But yes, Deus Ex: Human Revolution is yet another instant classic. I honestly hope this studio makes another and learns from what they did in this game (which I believe they will, they seem the type to listen to customers :p).

Also, let me know what you think when you get to the Pick an Ending bit. In fact, I'd like to know everyone's thoughts on that because, frankly, I thought it was the stupidest thing ever.

See, as an epic RPG whore, generally your actions, interactions or even lack of actions (read: your choices, basically) lead up to how the game concludes in a non-linear narrative. What they did in this game is basically what Bethesda do in their RPGs: they give you choice in a "bubble" or a "pocket" which only affects that tiny pocket and contributes nothing to the remainder of the game. The fact that the game ends basically by saying, "pick your ending by pushing one of these four fat red buttons" is a lot like saying, "You know everything you did in this game? Yeah, it's all meaningless. All pointless, none of it matters and it was all just a bunch of filler for you to get to this point and yes, push a button and end the game."

It feels like everything you experienced was really just that meaningless.

There are small things that I love, that I loved back in the first game: enter the women's bathroom for whatever reason and someone will eventually say, "Oh, and Jensen, stay out of the women's bathroom." Where if you take too long in the beginning, the hostages die. Where if you do missions without killing anyone, they make mention of that. Where if you do or don't take the replacement biochip, you'll see. Where if you gun-fight to get to a certain NPC, the cutscene is COMPLETELY different to if you snuck in there. I love those little things, they give you a wonderful illusion that your choices have somehow affected everything in the long-term. But then you get to that ending where NOTHING YOU DID MATTERS?!

That annoys me. A lot. But everything up until that point? Oh yeah, loved it.

Thanks but not really a review, just a rant for the hell of it :3

Definitely a must get. It could easily be game of the year, it's not exactly up against stiff competition.

As of now it's only really up against Portal 2 and the Witcher 2, but a fair amount of competition is on the way and I just don't see it beating the likes of Uncharted 3 or Skyrim.

Time will tell, but I don't see this game getting GOTY. Definitely a contender though. :)

Jarre this man types paragraphs, too lazy to read XD but jislaik I'm itching for this game. Atleast it's good to know that dispite these rants, your still fully enjoying the game.

I never even bothered finishing Portal 2. I'll get there at some point but it didn't really "grip" me. A game that keeps me lucid for into the late morning before my state of epic exhaustion kicks in and demands rest? That's rare and a feeling I love. Witcher 2 didn't give me that, although I did enjoy it. I don't own a PS3, so Uncharted is lost on me. And as for Skyrim? I think Skyrim falls into a time of year where it will only really be up against next year's contenders but I might be wrong. Regardless, it's a Bethesda game and as much as I sincerely hope (and am putting faith in the fact that) they learnt from their previous games, I still have my doubts.

Skyrim does stand to do everything right from the get go: they finally have a truly class-free levelling system, mobs don't level with you, there seem to be some actual choices and consequences now, they've added a lot of small details for the sake of immersion like NPCs with routines--blacksmithing, cutting wood, cooking, etc and they seem to have realised what makes an RPG an RPG as opposed to a glorified action adventure game with RPG mechanics.

Skyrim may very well be Bethesda's best game yet and the moment when they finally realised how to do everything right. But we'll see, I refuse to speculate and get my damn hopes up again just yet :p

I honestly think that Deus Ex: Human Revolution is the best game this year. Hell, it might even be the best game in a few but opinions on the matter are subjective so take my opinion with some salt :p

Well being a sceptic, and still regarding DX1 as the best game ever, I can safely say that, YES, this is a worthy successor. I agree with what Lycan said here:

The Story in DX1 was more rich, conveyed better and actually felt like it was something that could happen so to speak. It felt like you were really part of this huge conspiracy. It got even better with all the MJ12, illuminati, Freemason references etc.
In DX3, it doesn't feel like that. All the missions / story itself feel a bit shallow, you feel like no more than a little errand boy running around doing quick fix jobs. Well it feels like this to me at least.

Apart from that, and the occasional niggles here and there, I am thoroughly enjoying it.

Yay! I'm not the only one who feels this way! I'm just going to try my best to ignore the epic brainfart I apparently had in that quote :o

I agree, again :3

So, Lycanthrope, what game is your next conquest?
Personally, I'm uber keen for W40K Space Marine & Resistance 3.

Great review.

Thanks but it's still just a rant :p

I'm interested in Space Marine but don't think I'll be getting it on release. The demo felt very hack-and-slash mindless (hack-and-slash is a genre I can't stomach) so I'll wait to see what others think before I grab it. But since it's a W40K game, chances are pretty good I'll end up getting it soon after release regardless (my significant other is a big fan of the IP).

Off the top of my head the next must-have games in the foreseeable future are Old Republic (my SO has pre-ordered the CE for both of us in Denmark and we have early access ), Skyrim, Mass Effect 3, Dead Island (which I've pre-ordered on Steam) and the Darkness 2.

I've pre-ordered the Skyrim CE from BT Games but I'm really hoping you guys list it. I'd much rather get it from you (if I never have to deal with BT again it would be too soon). I don't suppose you have a rough idea of when or if you'll have it and Mass Effect 3 CE up? :o

Unfortunately, we wont be getting the CE of Skyrim... Bethesda selected BT as their SA retailer of choice...
With regards to Mass Effect 3, I am listing it either this week or next. I am still trying to get confirmation from EA what different editions they will have available.
I will post it on the forum as soon as I have the info :)

Oh for the love of <bleeeeeeeeeeeep>!

It is beyond me why publishers continue to make use of what can only be considered THE MOST INEPT retailer in South Africa, online and offline.

Idiots.

Thank you though, Kalahari rep :3

Woohoo!

Fantastic :3

Looking forward to pre-ordering with you guys :D

Well, as a Deus Ex fan, and someone who has only started playing Human Revolutions, this has been an awesome thread to read. But...the game is only 7 days old. Where do you find the time to finish it already!?!? ;-)

Haha dude, it seems there is always some playing Deus Ex on my friends list now.
