Diablo III will be always-online, but not because of piracy: Blizzard explains

I must say I actually feel bad for those that don't have Internet as it's going to become a major problem. However if a person desperately wants to play D3, then to me that article reads sales pitch to me in order to convince people to get some form of online connection. :)

most people have connections @ home now. Lets be honest.... If you can afford a R400 game and PC that can run a game like this, then you can afford an internet connection

Yes, It is only the imperials elite that can have broadband. We must give the power to the masses and break down colonial lines in our society. XD

As for the always on Internet, I have never really had any problems with that. I can't say, that I have had a problem with it yet, where I could not play a game due to it. They do seem to put a fair amount of work into it, to make it as smooth and flawless as possible.

I guess that's fine, after thinking about it, I will only be playing it online anyway. Question is if they port this to consoles (like they say they want to) what do they plan on doing then?

"If people want to pirate the game, they’re going to find ways to pirate the game"
So what's the use of forcing always online if people will find a way to disable it anyway?
Developers are finding more and more ways to alienate gamers whether it's to prevent so-called piracy or to give a "better user experience".

They area gunning along the same lines of "better quality service" being interconnected all the time. Just like hellgate london :D

I've never really had an issue with "always online" games.

Well maybe when Afrihost has had a few issues or when they mess about at our exchange or when our ADSL line desyncs and refuses to resync till after midnight.... Oh wait .-.

Come to think of it I did have issues >.> DRM I didn't mind either, until I had to reinstall the game for some odd reason...

But hey as long as there are hackers out there that have more patience than me to bypass the internet access requirement I'm still willing to buy games and be able to use those in times of a lack of an internet connection.

Well unless the content is unoriginal, the gameplay is staler than 3 week old bread and they basically give you a stripped down version of the game and tell you to buy DLC's "to get the "best" experience".

What if the person who does not have the net buys the game and them uses the pirated version?
Would that be bad?

Not saying I am going to do this just out of curiosity.

Lol my bad. Still a habit I have to unlearn. Comes from the fact that I think faster than I can type so it has a tendency to happen still. But I'll fix it up, thanks for pointing it out XD.

And concerning the whole the whole concept of using a patch to make the game playable offline? Well as long as you own a copy, it isn't a lost sale to them. But it does still have some legal implications since you're modifying the final product which is protected against modding in the EULA. But what they don't know can't hurt them ^_^.

But then again the patch could lead to some other issues along the way that are yet to be discussed at a later stage. Till more is known about DIII's online model we'll see what one could be missing out on through the use of an offline patch.

Since I don't have ADSL, will I be forced to get the 10gig 8ta deal to play online?
How much data does an average 1 hour online gaming session use?

I don't see the problem in being connected to play anymore.
Everyone is connected most of the time while gaming anyway.
And if it keeps the cheaters and gold-sellers out of the game im all for it!

Depends on what you're playing and with how many people.
If your playing a online game alone, very little data gets transmitted.
50mb or less

Where as if your running a raid in WOW with 25 ppl and vent you will use up to +150mb per hour.

you would think that will stop the Chinese but i am willing to bet they will find a way around the problem especially if they can make real money

Hoozah! to the Chinese and their farming ways!

Well I doubt it will incite any form of prevention, but it is more than likely going to add a different edge to things as they release patches and DLC's later on. You never know what these corporates have planned for us til they actually tell you.

We should hear a bit more about what goes on once people have started discussing what goes on in the Beta, Blizzard probably hid some things that could make "always on internet" a nicety (for a lack of better words) (Plus I highly doubt it, probably just pulling a UbiSoft (which I also doubt))

If it ends up like starcraft II you will only need internet access to login to offline mode once to play the game so you barely will need much data.
