Real Life SWAT member blasts BF3’s inaccuracies

“I’M RETIRED AFTER 15 YEARS SWAT AND CAN TELL YOU THE TAC LIGHTS AND LASERS ARE BEING IMPROPERLY USED AND MAKE WHAT HAS BEEN A FAIRLY REALISTIC EXPERIENCE SEEM LIKE HALO OR SOME FAKE GAME.

I WAS ISSUED AN MP5 AND MADE HUNDREDS OF ENTRIES USING THAT WEAPON AS MY PRIMARY AND HAD MY KIMBER TLE 1911 .45 WITH TAC LIGHT ON MY RIGHT LEG IN MY DROP HOLSTER. MP5 9MM HAD A LIGHT ON THE FOREGRIP WITH A RUBBER PRESSURE SWITCH FOR QUICK ON AND OFF DEPRESSIONS.

THE REASON YOU NEED A LIGHT THAT TURNS ON AND OFF QUICKLY IS BECAUSE OF WHAT WE CALL “LIGHT DISCIPLINE” YOU CAN READ ALL ABOUT IT BUT IN SUMMARY LIGHTS CAN HELP YOU OR HURT YOU. WHEN MOVING IN A SQUAD OR CELL YOU NEVER WANT TO “BACK LIGHT” YOUR TEAM MEMBERS WHICH CREATES A TARGET FOR THE ENEMY. YOU NEVER WALK AROUND WITH YOUR LIGHTS ON OR THE ENEMY SEES YOU COMING AND CAN PICK YOU OFF EASILY BY SHOOTING AT YOUR LIGHTS AND WATCHING THEM BACK LIGHT YOUR TEAM. FLASHLIGHTS ON HANDGUNS OR SUB GUNS ARE FOR CLEARING BUILDINGS AND CUTTING CORNERS CAREFULLY THEN TURNED OFF TO MOVE UNDETECTED.

THIS GAME NEEDS A MOMENTARY SWITCH FOR LIGHTS, NOT AN ON/OFF SWITCH OR A STUPID HANGUN THAT AIMS UPWARD WITH LIGHT ON AS YOU RUN OR MOVE. NEVER RUN WITH A FLASHLIGHT ON. NEVER RUN WITH YOUR HANDGUN AIMED STRAIT UPWARD. NEVER WALK OR DO ANYTHING WITH YOUR WEAPON POINTED UPWARD, THAT’S HOLLYWOOD CRAP. GUNS ARE CARRIED IN A “LOW READY POSITION” DOWNWARD AND BELOW WHERE YOUR EYES ARE SCANNING FOR TARGETS THEN YOU CAN AQUIRE A TARGET AND RAISE UP AND FIRE. IF YOUR GUN IS AIMED UP YOU SEE THE SAME TARGET AND THEN LOWER THE GUN ON THE TARGET MOMENTARILY BLOCKING YOUR VISION AS YOUR ARM OR ARMS COME DOWN CROSSING YOUR FIELD OF VISION. (STUPID)

FLASHLIGHTS ARE PRIMARILY LED HIGH INTENSITY LIGHTS, BUT THEY DO NOT PRODUCE THE KIND OF LIGHT SIMULATED IN THIS GAME IN ALMOST ANY ENVIRONMENT THIS GAME SEEMS TO PRODUCE A HUGE WHITE AREA WHERE YOU CANNOT TELL THE CENTER OR SOURCE OF THE LIGHT. THAT IS BS. FLASHLIGHTS ON GUNS TEMPORARILY BLIND THREATS/TARGETS, BUT THAT LASTS ONLY A FEW MOMENTS AND THEN THE TARGET CAN RETURN FIRE ACCURATELY AIMING FOR YOUR LIGHT. THIS IS WHY THE FBI STARTED HOLDING FLASHLIGHTS IN THE OFF HAND UP HIGH AND TO THE SIDE SO IF THE CRIMINAL OR TARGET SEES THE LIGHT THEY MISS THE AGENT. THIS WAS DETERMINED AFTER POLICE AND FBI GOT SHOT TIME AND TIME AGAIN IN THE PAST USING THE “HOGAN” METHOD OF CROSSING ARMS AND KEEPING THE FLASHLIGHT NEAR THEIR HANDGUN.

LASERS ARE WHAT SWAT MEMBERS CALL “CRUTCHES FOR THOSE WHO CANNOT POINT SHOOT”. WE NEVER USED LASERS FOR A NUMBER OF REASONS BUT TO KEEP IT SHORT: IT TAKES LONGER TO LOOK FOR YOUR RED DOT ON THE SUSPECT THEN FIRE, THAN TO JUST FIRE FROM THE LOW READY POSITION USING A POINT AND SHOOT METHOD OF NON SITED FIRE. ALSO THEY DON’T EMIT A LONG BEAM VISIBLE UNLESS YOU ARE IN THE FOG OR SMOKE. IN EITHER CASE THEY GIVE AWAY YOUR ANGLE AND POSITION. THEY ARE COMPLETELY UNNECESSARY FOR TACTICAL PURPOSES AND ONLY USED FOR “PSYCHOLOGICAL” REASONS AND HOLLYWOOD DRAMA.

I CAN GO INTO MORE DETAIL, BUT THIS IS MY SUMMARY AND OPINION BASED ON 15 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE DOING THE REAL THING. RESEARCH THE TOPIC AND YOU WILL SEE I AM CORRECT.

nice read, but it is still but a game...

Maybe he's upset cause no one asked him for his imput on the game.....

he has clearly not see how most ppl play on these games... jumping around like rabbits and throwing grenades and flashbangs like its going out of fashion...

Well, if you're trying to sell the game with your uber realsim, you'll have to take some critisism. The one about moving with the gun pointed upwards, for example, is something very simple that should've been the first thing devs found in their research. I wonder if Dice responded..

Strictly speaking, you can't drive and fire a tank by yourself either ... nor can you fit into a jet with an RPG in your hand.

This guy should wait for BF3 - Project Reality. In the previous PR, you'd spin up the chopper blades for 2 mins before taking off to ensure they're warm ... and there are no player tags so when you shoot someone you have no idea if they're on your team or not.

The dude may have a point, but he's being extremely selective about it. As Adams mentions, it's a game, not a simulator.

Pfft, give me half a chance :P

Now that sounds awesome!

Dude, I loved PR! Mappy played it as well...way more realistic than you'd hope for at times. Jump out of a moving vehicle? You're dead.

Only limited number of kits per squad, so no team of medics stat padding each other. If you get shot, you can bandage yourself, but still bleed out over the next 5 mins or so.

Even the pilots select a pilot kit and have nothing other than a hand gun. Also, they're the only ones with parachutes, so don't expect to jump lob out of a chopper onto a spawn point.

When you build spawn points, you have to take out a shovel and dig at it. Also, there are maps where one team has to find and destroy hidden weapons caches without knowing their locations...and most crucial of all ... vehicles don't respawn, so you better take care of them. :)

Nice James!

I would put in some critique on their sniper rifles, sniper class, and scope details from my years of experience... but I don't really think it matters.
I do however find it laughable that people make war/combat games without ever doing more than 30 seconds worth of research per topic involved.

/goes off to + rep voicy

If you want a simulator instead of a game, piss off and join some army ....... geezuz, there is some seriously ridiculous shit coming from people over a game that is not even released yet.

I found the read quite interesting, it's nice to know how things actually work in real life but that doesn't mean they always have to be in the game. Games have to make sure things are balanced, so if something is good at one thing you need to make it bad at another. So BF3 chose to offset the power of it being able to blind enemies with the fact that it's always on and can give away your position. I still feel the light is overpowered especially in Operation Metro, and any other closed in map, where it's just about better than any other attachment because it blinds the enemies for as long as you are aiming at him. This should really be more of a flashbang type of thing where you are momentarily blinded but then most of your vision returns.

I be playing BF3 and MW3 like this from now on...

if you want an army simulator go real life or get a decent one like arma... Don't except something where it's obviously not, you are just making yourself looking retarded.

/note this is not directed towards OP but person(s) in the article.

Certainly. There is however some merit in keeping the game "clean" to some extent. e.g. If they add a UT3 plasma gun then it just wouldn't fit right even though it would be fun.

Exactly. A game is supposed to be played to have fun, no?

I love how army / police veterans take these games so seriously.
I can also image them sitting down to play one and get a 12 year old kid call him a noob.
Some people need to take life less serious in these matters.

Which brings me to getting called a noob by angry kids , theres some serious need for medication out there.
Played dota last night , what a scene that was.

If you want a realistic war game then play any of the ARMA games, I'd like to hear the pro military guys crit ARMA's realism.

In no way have I seen Battlefield claiming or promising to be realistic.
