At rAge there was this little stand with a guy and a pretty lady telling people about a new chess site here in South Africa. It sounded interesting and so I gave it a try and now I'm hooked.

The thing is that the site needs more players. It's nice to see something small grow and eventually become something awesome. I remember when MyGaming just started and I wondered whether it will make it and here we are.

Now, I'm hoping that the same thing can happen with ChessConquest. What makes ChessConquest special is that games are played over a longer period. Most games you have two days to make one move, however the person setting up the game can choose the amount of time per move. So it means you've got a couple of games going at a time and some of them are finished in an hour and others in a couple of weeks.

The people running the site are open to suggestions so it's the ideal time to make an impact at a new site.

I didn't ask any of them if it's alright to start this thread but eh hopefully they'll be happy about it. There's also not a forum or such there at the moment so we can chat in this thread.

So please come join me? It's addictive and it's ideal in this fast paced world to sit and relax with a game of chess.
 
I joined up last night and started a few games, trying to piece back what I remember of chess it's been a while :) I got a few friends to join but I doubt they will play much. Hopefully a few people join in from MyG.
 
Awesome! I'm glad that someone from MyGaming joined. What name are you using there fayainz? The same as here? I will go check tonight and challenge you. :) I'm also playing for the first time in years.

I used to play at school and then for years after that I didn't play. Then one day I was challenged by a friend and I got into the whole chess thing again. I played online and studied openings and went pretty crazy. Then one day I just quit when I realized I'll never be a master because I just suck too much.

Luckily I've learned since then that's it's about enjoying the game. And now I do just that. :) It actually feels easier this time around.
 
I got the one year free subscription (unless they gave to everyone that gave email) will be joining tonight
 
I'm glad to see so many MyGaming people joined. :) fayainz, I looked through the rankings last night and could not find you.

Ugh and I was tired yesterday after work and didn't concentrate properly and so my ass was kicked. :)
 
I think i've seen you on the rankings, I'm definately there somewhere. Also got my ass handed last night lol and now I'm on a shameful ranking of P 922..
 
This is AWESOME... and a little addictive :)

They only need a bit more players... I'm putting the link up on my facebook, although not sure if anyone will care since I'm almost allergic to FB... haven't been on there in 2 months.

Finished 3 games so far and won.
 
Haha I also find it addictive. :) Have been playing every night this week.

Sheesh you are doing well. So far I've completed 6 games of which I won 3, lost 2 and drew 1.
 
Two games were very difficult and I basically won with luck (Yotta and Pastor John)... the other guy was also tough, but made a mistake which cost him his queen (not so tough now :))... but he promised me a proper rematch.

I'm just struggling to finish my games. I have about 8 games in progress and people are taking too long to respond (I know, its me... I'm kinda impatient when in the middle of a game)

I'll challenge you tomorrow. I try to finish a game a day. :) Strangely enough I also played against Yotta and Pastor John. I beat the pastor but drew with Yotta.

Hey guys!

I'm quite an avid chess player and I'm glad to see the game developing in our country. I have been involved in chess in South Africa for about 20 years now, and it's only in the last couple of years that more places offered the opportunity for chess players of any age or skill to play for free.

If there are some of you that would prefer to play live games (as apposed to this site where you make moves every now and again), make sure to check out www.ChessCube.com ! It's also a South African site, and already has over 1,4 million registered users around the world, after being created in 2007. It is free to play as much as you would like, with the option of spending money on things like online coaching from Grand Masters around world, merchandise (chess books etc), to mention a few.

Check it out, it's great fun with a wonderful interface.
 
Ah cool that site looks nice PatPion. I will try it out properly this weekend. Last night when I checked it out some stuff wouldn't load but I had serious website loading problems.
 
So I tried out ChessCube. It's awesome that a South African site can become so big! I really really want to support these guys and play there but there's some serious problems.

1) The interface. Though pretty, it's very poorly designed. My first and only game so far at ChessCube happened by accident and I'm still not sure why the game started. I wish they could hire someone who could point them in the right direction. Pretty does not equal functional. At university one of the books we had to study was The Design of Everyday Things (http://www.amazon.com/Design-Everyday-Things-Donald-Norman/dp/0385267746) and I really wish that the people running the site would read it.
2) The speed of games. Most tournaments are 1 or 2 minutes a game. Wow that's fast. I just can't play at those speeds. The most time I've seen so far per game for a tournament is 10 minutes. I just can't participate.
3) Site organization. A site review didn't even know that ChessCube had a forum until someone pointed it out. I know that ChessCube has videos that you can rent for a couple of days. Did you know that they also have a program that you can download and then buy videos? I wonder if they have chess articles. And if so, how do you get to it?
4) How can I change that huge chessboard to a smaller size besides changing the browser size? I've got a big screen. It just feels like the people who designed the site aren't actually using it themselves.

So yes, I really want to support ChessCube. It's South African and that's awesome. But currently I can't play there. Maybe I'm just too slow, I don't know.

I'll go check out Chess.com in the meantime until something has been done at ChessCube. I wish I could help them somehow. And for the nice long games where you get a long time to think, well ChessConquest remains perfect for that.

Actually, if other people can play so fast then surely I should be able to. It will just take practice. So I'll try it out and see how it goes.

I actually also checked out ChessCube and it seems very nice... I didn't go into much detail.
The thing for me is that I don't always have the time to go and sit down and finish a game... I play in-between things (probably why I blunder so much) which is why this ChessConquest, although very basic, works 100% for me.

Funny... I actually read that book too :)... I think for a subject called "Languages of Logic"
