Anti-pirate pirates Deux Ex, injects surprise, uploads as torrent

Nic says in the article that most people responded that they would purchase the game if it was cheaper. I do not dispute that they said this; however it does seem a little too self-motivated to be taken seriously. They may have thought, "well, if enough people respond in this way, we might see a drop in prices..." Very controversial article.

Unfortunately for us in SA, these games are grossly overpriced. In the US, earning $$$, I dont see why you'd want to pirate?

Hence why the majority of pirates are from developing nations. There are people in SA who don't even know the difference between pirated and legal software. They certainly have no remorse.

Gabe Newell keeps saying the same thing as well.

Some people i know are aware of the difference but would rather get the pirate than spend money on the orignal even though they can afford it, they being cheap and i make them aware of this my friends and all... lol. But on the other hand i am actively getting some them to change over to orignals even if it is telling them to wait till a price drop which seems to be working well atm.

So imho if some of the games were released at a lower price point i am sure they'd sell better.. Maybe if all games console and PC were priced at the PC price tag we would have a winner. Since PC versions are usually half the price of the console counterparts.

I'd have to agree, but when it comes to piracy PC's are the main pirating platform. If they kill some forms of DRM and bring down game prices by R100 at release, then maybe, just MAYBE they might be able to combat it. But then again some gamers are just cheap by nature :-P

I agree but also think the longer they take to fix it the worse its going to get and harder to fix. Meaning after while the pirates that would of bought game if it was cheaper stop looking at the price and just pirate out of habit.(AKA me ill wait for the steam special)

Well I certainly don't want to work for free, do you?

Spookie's got a point pirates can break an industry... if they really tried but thankfully there are loads of people who have common sense and do the right thing even if it does cost a bit.

The xbox's games get pirated maybe not as much as the pc's but still alot. the only downside is the chance of getting the xbox live account banned.

What I want is to be able to work once, then keep getting paid for it for the rest of life. Hell, my poor children will need to be able to keep getting paid for that work, otherwise the poor sods might have to get their own jobs and work for a living.

Anyway, no-one is working for free. And not because of any notions that buying is doing the right thing.

And if they're getting a low buy rate in poorer countries because their prices are high they'll get absolutely no sympathy from me. Instead of whining about how unfair it all is they can lower their prices to an appropriate level.

You don't really understand how royalties work, do you? Just because you only worked once doesn't mean you should stop receiving money for your product after a while. How about authors writing books, should it be frowned upon that they still receive loyalties years after the book has been published?

I agree with you on the prices, though. Lower prices = more sales. If only publishers can realize this.
