Just over a month and already another version of Firefox is released.

Some of the new features of Firefox 8 include:

  • Improved performance and memory handling when using <audio> and <video> elements
  • Added CORS support for cross-domain textures in WebGL
  • Added support for HTML5 context menus
  • Added support for insertAdjacentHTML
  • Improved CSS hyphen support for many languages
  • Improved WebSocket support
  • Added a preference to load tabs on demand, improving start-up time when windows are restored

Another two features of note is that the built-in search box in Firefox’s navigation toolbar has been extended to support Twitter searches, and add-ons installed by third party applications are disabled by default and a prompt is displayed if users want the add-on enabled.

Are they trying to cathup on version numbers to chrome?? Its funny how fast these new versions are releasing considering they usually take thier time and give you something good.
 
Yeah I don't quite understand it. They could have held back Firefox 7 and released it with these new features. Also, it's probably annoying for add-ons dev's because of compatibilty issues.
 
Disabled 90% of the add-ons when I installed 8, browsing is a tad faster, nothing to write home about. The number system is pure psychological, software with a lower number seem inferior, or so they say I could not give two hoots about that.
 
Mine Firefox 7 automatically updated mine to 8, and just notified me lol :/ This is getting mad how fast they are bringing in their releases. Nothing new to see in this...

Yeah that is the reason i moved to opera, that damn crash happens every two mins for me, if not immediately on start up... Firefox is done and dusted in my books.

Its not a question of "figuring it out" as such. Chrome uses a separate process for each tab, Firefox does not. Both approaches have merit:
Chrome: Tabs crash alone
Firefox: Can open 50+ tabs of content without everything grinding to a halt.

You can see the effect in the Task Manager's processes tab.

On a side note, I've had chrome crash on me regularly since the last update. Shockwave component pulls the whole thing down (all tabs). Firefox isn't doing much better...freezes regularly for a few sec then recovers. :(
 
FF is still bawlz slow, often becomes unresponsive and just generally losing the plot. I have an old laptop and I now use Chrome. It is so much lighter and faster. And this versioning is just another absolute rubbish PR stunt. I used to be a huge fan of FF but now it's just bloatware. They keep saying that with every release that it will be faster, however, I have yet to see this.
 
I agree that this "versioning" isn't the best, but I personally find Firefox pretty fast as opposed to it being bawlz slow. There are rare times where it becomes unresponsive for a few seconds with too many tabs open, but it doesn't crash.

Also I use Firefox for its add-ons, some of which aren't available for Chrome and others which are still in beta phase and only do half the job of which it does with Firefox.

Nevertheless, to each his own :)

At my parent's place, my PC is there and is fairly fast, and I have no issues with FF there. It's now that I have moved out and only have this slow laptop that I'm complaining. On this laptop, FF is really slow etc but with Chrome, it's a breeze. I guess one can only see this effect if one uses a really outdated piece of equipment :p
