Web Africa launches uncapped ADSL

The rolling window sounds pretty much the same as the one IS uses. No thanks, I'll stick to my VB account on OpenWeb, where I'm barely feeling any restrictions.

Can you give more information? I am on a Axxess Express+ account and is paying R899. What speed is the one you got and what do they charge?
 
Guys, let me just add that you will only be throttled once our network is at full capacity and is under load.
 
The key part is missing. Limits don't apply during D+ hours...which means you can move some serious data.

Anyway the 384k one works out to R3 per gig *before* hitting the thresholds, or ~60% of line capacity [100gb]. After thresholds would depend on how the network handles it, but I reckon another 20gigs at least. So essentially you can run the line close to 24/7.
 
Hm, we already have our line with WA and it looks like if I did get the uncapped from WA I'd be saving R99pm. My main concern is the threshold. If I was downloading a 10GB game from Steam right now, then I'd be throttled within 2 hours. That's something I don't need to worry about with MWEB.
 
That 6hr rolling window period just seems unfair.

Let's say I'm on a 4mbps line and have downloaded nothing the entire month, I get a beta key for SWTOR on Friday and start the 20GB download. Now 20GB is way under the 44GB allowed per week but because I'm downloading it all in one go I get hit with throttling several times. So instead of my 20GB download taking 20hrs (assuming 1GB/hour) and being ready for the weekend it will now take me 40hrs to download. So my one and only time I actually wanted to download anything I'm de-prioritized because of this ridiculously small window.

Of course this all depends on what speeds you get after the limit but since you haven't said it could be anywhere from zero to full line speed.
 
Monk, good point made; havent thought about that yet after seeing this. Not happy with Mweb international pings, but I cant say this will improve anything regarding that as this is also an uncapped account. The weekly 44GB does not sound bad, but yeah downloading a 20GB Guild Wars 2 beta and doing more than 3GB in 6 hours will get you throttled again and again. (when it comes out) It will just make me cry when I cant finish the download; and then play it :D
 
@Monk and @ChameleonDevil, that's exactly why I'm weary of the product. Like the last two days I hardly downloaded anything, but say today I wanted to download a big file, lets say a 5GB patch then I'd have a bit of a problem...

These uncapped accounts are competitively priced when keeping performance and stability in mind. Upgrading your account to an uncapped package would be a quick and simple process. The threshold only occurs if the network is under load, which at this moment is unlikely to occur considering our network is of high quality and measures have been put in place to ensure that the extra demand does not affect our other clients or the uncapped clients. If the network capacity has been reached or the network has become saturated, you will then be shaped. The idea of this is to prevent people from completely swamping the network with insanely large downloads (500+gigs for example)

You would be fine. You can also schedule large downloads for Download Plus which does not count towards your usage.
 
This is where uncapped in general in this country fails, that would really then not be uncapped now would it.....

But this is a infrastructure problem and not much theses guys can do. They are trying to deliver with what they have....

IMO Uncapped do not work for gaming tried mweb and it failed so I am back to my unshaped capped accounts....
 
In my opinion pure uncapped is not really sustainable. Providing hundreds of gigs at a consistent speed, without being throttled is not something we really see. These accounts are prioritized for gaming traffic, gaming on it is far from problematic.

Quick question Six, are you aware if they give trial accounts to test as with mweb? I might test and see how it respond and then look at ordering uncapped, it needs to convince me.....

I'm looking at getting a line when I move into my flat next year. This sounds like a good deal.

Is there not any daytime/night time/afterhours kind of thing?

I was with axxess 2/3years back and the throttling was VERY INTENSE. and the rolling windows were like every 24hours or something. Cancelled after a month.
 
Whilst I think it's great that WA have finally joined the uncapped wagon for home users, I still find Mweb's the best. No caps or throttles that I've ever heard of.

Agree with what Monk said about being penalised if you decide to suddenly download some big ass game via Steam or whatver. Yes, those restrictions only apply if the network is under load etc, but how will the customer know if it is or isn't?

Not to go into too much detail, as I don't want to 'advertise' in a thread for another ISP, but I got my account while they were on special for R258. It's an OpenWeb Gold 384 account, on the VB backbone. I've been downloading without stop for the last four months and haven't been shaped or throttled even once.

The unfortunate thing about this is that it will probably only hold true for the first few months. Then it's going to fill up with more users, and the quality will degrade to the point where it's pretty much the same as any other offering. It's unfortunate, but that's pretty much the way every new uncapped offering goes.

No prob. It is a good deal, WebAfrica is known for their performance and stability, having an uncapped account on top of that is pure win. With regards to the afterhours downloading - During Download Plus hours (12AM - 7AM) no bandwidth is counted towards your threshold or data usage.

I see your point - However, we have a high quality performance network to ourselves, so performance is not likely to degrade. Measures are in place to prevent the network from being pancaked.
