The US protect IP Act - Big media seeking to wreck the internet as we know it

I was faced with this last night when I joined one of my "Embassy Websites"
I signed the petition but the question is
Would the Internet not be a better place without so many Yanks online?

The problem with this is, seeing as everyone thinks that the US is the Be all and end all of the world, they will follow suit, so the net will becomes like Nazi Germany and we'll all be forced to follow the rules or face being sued/banned for speaking our mind/posting a link to a mp3 ect. LoL what is the world coming too xD

The net is the greatest invention of all time and now these clowns wanna moderate and dictate how its used and what its used for..Fucking stupid...

This is where a country like South Africa needs to step up as a proponent of free and open web standards. We have a fantastically clever tech industry and with all the undersea cables coming in, we are well positioned to be a major global internet hub.

It would be amazing if the SA govt could show the balls and intelligence to make something like this a reality, and not introduce stupid legislation to ruin it *cough*secrecy bill*cough*

The US and Euro-zone economies are floundering due their own hubris, and they are desperately trying to lock down the flow of information to keep society under control. Locking down the internet is a terrifying signal that things aren't going so well for the so-called world powers.
 
So basically - they want the world to have China's internet?

I wish them the best of luck (well ... not really), but there are always going to be countries and territories out there who are going to give the US the finger and allow download sites to host within their borders.
 
They want to be able to stop people from free thinking. They want it so that only their propaganda is the only thing people can view.

Considering that South Africa, as a country, cant imagine what its like to have an attack on a 9/11 scale I say we cant understand their fears.

I think people throw big words like "Like Nazi era Germany", Police State and Totalitarian government around way to easily without truly understanding the situation or even the terms for one.

Anybody ever consider the world is in its current fucked up state because of all the free-love hippy era left over BS?

While I would love to carry that conversation, it wouldn't belong in this thread.
Suffice to say that banks are not the problem, money is. So are all of us.

I have a Russian Friend and even at the HEIGHT of Communism and all the strict embargoes and goverment sanctioned censorship they found a way to negate the legislation, they found a way, so will any person forced unwillingly to alienate themselves

Take a minute and think about what the internet is, if you come to a conclusion like some of the people I know and answer the Internet is for porn then you are lost
If you instead see the Internet for what it has become, our Collective Species Intelligence, then you are on the right track
It is the ONLY truly Free State, albeit a virtual one and should be free from all domestic and international legislation

I for one will defend this Collective until my dying breath if need be

If a singular government or a group of goverments decide to regulate this, there will only be one inevitable outcome, we will internalize the Internet and build one ourselves, we have the technology available in just about every house in every country and can rebuild an international network without any Governments getting involved
SO sit back and watch them alienate the citizens they pretend to serve and see what happens when the final switch is pulled

They CAN stop some of us, but they cannot stop ALL of us
