ChessConquest - official discussion thread

Yotta... Just one thing (don't know if mentioned already), but perhaps you can add email notifications for when tournament matches start. A tournament match started for me over the weekend and the other guy's time is already up, but I doubt he even knows the games have started. Just an email similar to when someone challenges you will do.

Hey ViperGTI, we've scheduled the "tournament-started-email-reminder" feature as part of the ChessConquest version 2 development list.

Hey Horlicks00, we've added this feature. When you view a game or the history page, you'll notice that there is now a victory description that indicates how the game ended (e.g. check mate, draw by agreement, timeout etc).

Thanks Yotta it helps a lot and it makes it more clear now.

Thanks... Just as a matter of interest (not rushing you or anything)... but do we have an ETA on version 2? I'm kinda itching to see it :)

Currently we don’t have an ETA set yet, but will announce one as soon as possible.

We are just as eager to switch over to version 2, since the improvements to the architecture in version 2 puts us in a much better position attend to new feature requests. ;)

The whole interface of version 2 is rebuilt using jQuery UI widgets, so you can expect a much faster and better looking website.

Without giving away to much (kinda want the new version to be a suprise), you can visit visit the following link.

http://www.chessconquest.com/demo

This is an outdated version of the new chessboard widget (pieces cannot move in this demo and we decided to remove the trailing effect since it might distract players), but it will give you a general idea of the graphics improvements we’re working on. Note that the chessboard will probably still change a bit towards the final release.

Thanks... looks great and jQuery will probably make the game more responsive so that's cool.

The trailing effect makes it look like a Chess and Snakes hybrid... two games in one :)

Very cool. It's nice to actually find people who care about others opinions and implement change. I've come across so many who just flat out ignore criticism/requests and end up with a lifeless static site.

Keep up the awesome work.

Yotta, well done for the changes you have made. However this page does not even load on my Backberry. I suggest that you transition to the new page over a period to make sure that you iron out the problems out.

TF, thanks for the heads up.

The link above is a very early stage prototype and we've already revised the chessboard component in many ways, that isn't visible in the demo. The official platforms that will be supported in ChessConquest version 2 includes IE6+, Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Opera, BlackBerry, Android, iPhone, Symbian and HTC.

We plan to switch over to version 2 when (AND ONLY WHEN) all the above mentioned platforms passed the test cycle. We will be thorough with our testing on all devices by making use of emulators, so that players can rest assured that they'll have a great gaming experience without any technical difficulties.

One of our goals in version 2 is to make ChessConquest more mobile friendly, since by doing so we create gaming satisfaction for players, which in return will grow the website.

Yotta, I see from the mail that you got everything to work with IE6 now. Eh, that's one of the reasons why I can't run a site like this. People who still run IE6 do not deserve to play there. :p I'd have a link on the front page:
"You are running a crappy old browser. Please download one of these. It will make your life better." with links to Chrome and Firefox. At work we also only support IE8 and higher.

LOL. After doing some research I realized about 30% of India still runs on Windows XP with IE6, so I have to take some time to create those IE6 workarounds.

Yotta, my biggest request is for a pgn exporter. :) Pretty pretty please. *begs*

I drew a game against your wife. I thought she only started recently and that she's not very good but she surprised me. She's a quick learner!

Um, what is a pgn exporter?

A pgn or rather .pgn is a way of recording chess games. It's short for Portable Game Notation. You can then import it into databases and other programs and analyze your games to see what you did wrong and where you could have played better.

She sure is a natural chess player and very proud of the draw in your game. Was a big confidence boost for her ;)

I planned to add this to version 2 of ChessConquest, but since so many players is asking for this feature, we've started adding it to the current version of CC. Should have the website updated with this feature somewhere during this week.

I'm glad. :) She deserved the draw, she played very well.

Woohoo! Thanks yotta, that's awesome. :)

You're most welcome. PGN downloads now added. Simply view the game that you want the PGN of, and you'll notice there is a "Download PGN" link below the board. (This is not yet available on your game page, only on the view page).

Great stuff. Thank you very much Yotta. Will go have a look now. That's a great feature. :)

I have an idea for a feature request and i would like to know what you guys think about it.

While you play a game against an opponent you can chat with the person and the messages are timestamped, is there a way to get the chess moves also timestamped so that one can see when moves was made in comparison to the messages, at the moment there is a work around by you having to ask your opponent to mention the move number as well when sending a message.

Then i thought it would also be helpful to see on a persons profile an hour graph for the last 30 days showing at which time of the day that person normally make moves or is active on the site in your own timezone as people from all around the world is playing but everyone is playing at different times. In that way it make it easier to make moves around the same time possible.

Am i getting over analytical here or do you think this would be useful?
