CDProjekt still against DRM despite high levels of piracy

This is just sad, a developer who actually try and give their fans what they want and keep DRM out of it and they still get Ass-Raped by Pirates. Looking at this I can honestly say I dont blame other developers who, unlike CDProjekt, aren't brave (foolish?) enough to go the anti-drm route.

I also want those PC gamers who, repeatedly, come out and condemn other studios who implement DRM, saying that if they took an approach more akin to that of, for example CDProjekt, gamers would respect them more and Piracy would go down or people wouldn't pirate the product just to "stick it to the man".

This also just shows that there is no honour in the gaming community in general (yes there are those of us who remain valiant crusaders fighting the good fight).

The other developers who uses drm suffer as much from piracy. Have drm doesn't reduce piracy, it just hurts the legitimate consumer.

Pirates are idiots but solution is not to make life difficult for your legitimate consumer.

I totally agree cd projekt's view on this.

Oh I know, the constant DRM issue is just one more reason why I prefer Console to PC. But thats just me.

I agree DRM isn't the solution but try and think of it from the Developers point of view. No DRM it gets Pirated, DRM it gets pirated but it may put some off it. Personally I can understand why some developers choose, maybe against their better judgement, to stick to DRM.

IMHO the only way to truly eradicate piracy is via cloud based gaming like Onlive. But even then Im sure some Moocher out there will find a way to steal it.

The game came off a bit tacky for my personal taste, so I didn't bother buying it.
Before you assume, no I didn't pirate it either.

Played with it for about an hour at friend's house.

I admire their bleeding hearts and their intent with the game. I appreciate that they listened to customers on the DRM issue.
But I'm sad to say that good intentions do not automatically make something good.

I bought, and subsequently got bored of, the original so didn't get No 2. But yeah it is sad.

Problem is you can't just look at how many people downloaded you game and equate that to lost sales. People who pirate games pirate everything indiscriminately even if they never play the game for more than an hour, hell sometimes they never even install the thing. So someone who downloads 20-30 games a year would probably only ever buy like 4-5 a year if he had paid for them. Just considering the numbers The Witcher 2 is probably a 2M unit game since it's PC only and quite a niche/hardcore RPG so you would never expect it to get 7-8M legit sales.

No DRM it gets Pirated, DRM it gets pirated but it may put some legitimate customers off it.
Fixed :)

Some developers use drm just to show their board of directors they are doing something. It doesn't work and is very unlikely to ever work, if you can program something a cracker is 99% likely to crack it as well.

I am glad their are still some smart minority like cd projekt and valve out their, the gaming industry needs more of them and less of the likes of ubisoft.

Well for valve steam is one giant DRM, no?

The DRM nonsense strikes me as similar to our silly drug laws. When the initial obstacles don't work they think the answer must be to get ever more draconian. Very few step back and consider our idiotic the cycle is.

All that cloak and dagger stuff would be a huge pain. More likely they'll just make copies.

That's true. I've known some pathological hoarders who make use of almost none of what they download. It's a completely useless metric.

True but it brings added benifits to the consumer. Like bnet also in a sens a type of DRM but it brings with it more stuff than just needing to be online to play.

Plus Steam is more a platform and store rather than just DRM. Once you've started the game via Steam, you can disconnect from the internet. More importantly though, once a game is added to your Steam profile, you can simply log in from any computer and re-download any games that you might have lost and then of course, there are the famous steam specials.

I know but strip away all the features and at its core it is a way to prevent you from playing your pirate copy. Similarly Bnet has additional features but its still a piracy deterrent. Yes they are both the right kind of DRM but still DRM. If the Witcher 2 had required Steam to install would those numbers have been different?

No it wouldn't. Steam has been cracked , crackers have found a way to simulate it in order to run their cracked games.

Being a piracy deterrent is just a feature of steam but its not its main feature or its reason for being and that's what differentiates it from the other drm's.

You should play Witcher 2. I'm not just saying it because I'm a total Geralt fanboy. You'll enjoy it, it's very different from the first one.

There will always be work arounds but, IMO, valve very cleverly brands it a pipeline but I'm willing to bet somewhere someone said "this could be used as a Piracy deterrent, but lets not tell the world thats what we think".

Yeah that would do. It plays great with a controller anyway.

I still have my Witcher 1 Enchanced Edition back in SA just couldn't get into it. But yeah will check out Witcher 2, either when its on Console or when I get my new Laptop and can actually play it.
