Web Africa Home Uncapped gaming: details

1 mb line

How is the 1mb line.... I literally have just signed up for a new Webafrica account... 4mb line 10gb cap though for 549 per month.... is that enough for gaming only? how would the 1mb line work? cause a 1mb line uncapped is like 490 bucks per month... the 4mb line uncapped is out of my price range as is 900 so.... do u think ive made a logical decision or should i drop down to the 1mb line uncapped? really trying to get a quality gaming experience?

You'll experience the same or similar gaming experience as if you were using an uncapped 4Mb connection. That connection speed is fine, even for games with high bandwidth utilization such as Battlefield 3. Your pings should be normal and stable.

I've had a prepaid account with WebAfrica for a couple of years that I used to top up every so often. Then Afrihost popped up and that was never needed again.

I left OpenWeb's Gold accounts at the end of last month to give WA's 4Mb Uncapped Home product a shot and so far I'm quite impressed. My usage has been between 100-130GB for the last two years so I don't expect I'd hit any rolling windows unless I have to download a large client *cough 30GB Old Republic client *cough* from scratch.

I've just had a couple of minor niggles today though where Steam's support and billing system would keep timing out. This resulted in me ending up buying a gift twice. Quite frustrating.

Also, Skype isn't as smooth as I had hoped. It has odd "jerks" every so often. I'm hoping it clears up but we'll see.

Annnnd video Streaming is pretty temperamental... YouTube has better priority than video at gaming sites or filesharing services which pretty much sucks. Especially since I've used maybe 700MB all day, so I'm still "unthrottled."

So far those are my issues I'm hoping to get resolved. A little disappointed so far, but we'll see how it goes during the month.

C'est la vie.

How about a little more thorough test than a single pingtest run to a local server.

How are REAL local pings to Wage and Non-Wage servers before and after thresholds, local and international?

So will I get the same WoW/LoL/HoN/MW3/BF3/Gears3/UC3/etc pings regardless of my usage?

so the bandwith is fine? and also what about the 1mb line... is that good enough or not really....

Well since I have only started using this yesterday, on my 4mb line the throttle level is at 3.3gigs per 6 hours, but its hard to reach that with my line. I averaged about 2.5gigs per 6 hours. But that was also by scheduling tasks and so forth. The 12am - 6am was brilliant tho. I had 5 games on steam that needed to dl and they were all complete by 6am. So thus far happy with it. Havent tried much online gaming except Terraria last night and if there was lag I didnt notice it. Will try DCU later on today. I dont have that many multiplayer games currently.

Will be testing the online gaming side this weekend for another round of Star Wars, I'll let you know how it differs from last weekend where I was still on my normal connection.

You might want to change your approach there. During that period, nothing is counted towards thresholds. While steam downloads are, if configured correctly, never counted towards the threshold. Consequently downloading steam games during that time period makes little sense as your effectively wasting the 12-6 time slot. Rather download non steam data during that time & download steam during the day...that way neither is counted towards the threshold.

Also, I think its 12-7 for that a/c.

I will stick with mweb uncapped, don't like this idea of a threshold and being throttled.

Ditto, it's great if you don't need to download a lot otherwise I prefer the freedom I get from MWEB's offering. I download a lot on Steam and PSN and download plus hours just won't cut it on a 1Mb line...

See I dont download a lot, the uncapped was just a cheaper option with regards to family members and their addiction to youtube. Trust me 2 gigs a day just on youtube (I have netlimiter backing me up on that) was rather silly especially since we had a 25gig capped account. With the uncapped they can go mad on youtube and not cap us before the 15th which is what happened last month. I just prefer WA as my provider due to the quality of service I always get from them.

On the uncapped system Steam is no longer "free" so it makes more sense to download during the off peak times.

Oh yeah. Definitely. I'm mega impressed with their service.

They have THE BEST user control panel of any ISP and it's a big attraction to have that much control over you account, your billing, your services, etc.

I <3 WebAfrica long tym. Which is why I'm glad they finally have a service that's competitive and practical.

I had quite few billing issues with their system, it's been far from perfect. Maybe that is past them finally.

You fan boy you. ;)

I reckon I'm still fine with the redafrica account.

Hey, I can pay with my credit card and I have complete access to invoices and statements--things I never had with OpenWeb. I feel significantly more at ease utilising them.
