AMD HD7870 and HD7850 specs + pricing

The Joker

Thread Killer MKII
I know with the recent announcement and launch of the 7970 a lot of people would have felt that the card was a bit pricey, so I been digging around and waiting for an announcement on the 78xx series. Stumbled upon this and I am glad to say its excellent news :D

Reports confirm that AMD would be launching its Performance Segment Pitcairn based Radeon HD7870 and HD7850 graphic cards in February 2012, A month late after the launch of the High End Tahiti XT/Pro Series Cards which arrive in January 2012.

The Pitcairn XT/Pro based Graphics Cards would replace the Barts XT/Pro based HD6850/HD6870 while offering performance similar to the HD6970/HD6950. HD7870 and HD7850 would feature the 28nm VLIW4 Architecture instead of the GNC (Graphics Next Core) which would only be available on the higher end Tahiti Series.

HD7870 (Pitcairn XT):

The HD7870 would be based on the Pitcairn XT Core featuring 1536 ALU’s Clocked at 950Mhz, 96 Texture Units, 24SIMDs, 32ROPs and 120W TDP design. The 2GB GDDR5 memory would be maintained at a 5.8Gbps 186GB/S along a 256-bit wide memory interface.

The HD7870 would be priced at $299 US when launched.

HD7850 (Pitcairn Pro):

The HD7850 price and specs would put it at a sweet spot for budget gamers. Based on the 28nm Pitcairn Pro Core and offering performance similar to the HD6950/GTX560Ti. The card would feature 1408ALUs clocked at 850Mhz, 88 Texture Units, 32ROPs, 22SIMDs and a rated TDP design of 90W. A 2GB 256-bit wide memory interface would run at 5.2Gbps 166GB/s.

The HD7850 would be priced at $199 US when launched.
Release date of both cards would most likely be during 15th – 20th February 2012, Right after the Chinese New Year. Also more details would pop up at CES 2012 when AMD would launch its Tahiti Pro/XT Cards in January 2012

For the guys wondering how these cards will perform, I've been comparing specs to that of the 6950/6970 and I can say that the 7870 could will probably be faster than the current 6950, only slightly behind or on par with the current 6970.

Yet the card is no cheaper than the 6950... why buy it? Unless it can clock better? Most people dont change the clock on their gpu...

Well if you go according to specs I can tell you now these will run cooler, more efficient, use less power, overclock much better and scale much better if you plan on running crossfire. I really wanna see benchmarks on the 7870.. I reckon its gonna be fantastic.

My 5870 will end up being slow :(

Neah the 5870 is still a strong card, its starting to show its age a bit but its still as fast as today's Gtx560 Ti's :D
If you are planning on upgrading I recommend you sell that card now xD As I see the prices dropping to crazy low levels.

That's pretty much just comparing specs so not a true benchmark but it just shows how insanely awesome the 5870 is. Still one of the greatest GPU's ever made.

Fingers crossed that the 7850 only requires a 6 pin connector for power, and that it costs R2000-R2500. I really don't want to have to upgrade my PSU as well.

I am expecting it to sell for around R1900-R2000 when it launches in SA and seeing as the power requirements for the new 7xxx GPU's have dropped quite a lot I doubt you would need to upgrade you're psu.

So the 7850 looks to be a good upgrade from the 5770, worth the cash?

I'm thinking the same thing. I've been holding onto my 5770 waiting for something new with a good price, the 7850 looks like a great deal to me.

Might just grab myself one on release. :D

I'll stick with my crossfire 5870 for now. Runs a bit hour in the chassis, but not the end of the world.

Well I am going to wait till my 5770 starts struggling, at the moment it still serves me very well, so I will wait for the 7850 to go down in price a bit first. So maybe get one August'ish...

Sweet, I'm going to be looking out for these. I wonder when the mobile variants of these cards will hit our shores. Interested to see which laptops come equipped with that.

The awesome thing is that they will not be very power hungry on idle. I might have to go back to gaming laptops if they are really good.

I've got the same plan in mind, since I'm on a 5850 now, except maybe end of the year or next year this time.

So what's the word? Are these things coming in February? I'm looking for a new card (semi urgently) and if the 7850 is too far off I'm likely going with a 6870 then.

Still no official date, but it seems set for Feb. With the 7990 launching in March.
