Bethesda sheds id Software employees

Hectic, this is something I have wondered about, do you have a stable job if you work as a game programmer? Being the line of work I want to specialise in, the article concerns me somewhat.

There is always a chance you could get made redundant after a big project, especially if the studio doesn't have another big project lined up or the previous title didn't fare too well.

I guess that's the problem with 3D engine tech demos disguised as a full game release.

As much respect and admiration I have for id as the patriarchs of the FPS genre, to me RAGE showed their lack of ability to move with the times. Best to bow out gracefully less you become the crazy grandfather everyone tolerates while lamenting his decent into senility.

Brining a new engine to a console generation that is 7yrs old already just seems like a big mistake. Who is going to want to learn a new engine for a console which is near the end of its lifecycle, not to mention an engine which has some pretty major problems.

i was thoroughly impressed by idtech5. What I would liket o know, but would be an obvious breach of privacy, is who was fired? I'd like to know what contribution these ex-employees made to Rage/idtech5. My guess is that the people who were fired were the game designers. What a failure that was. I still love Carmie though (more than Gaben, that lovable fat bastard).

I would be interested to know what you considered impressive? (not in a sarcastic manner, just for sake of discussion)

For me it was wholly unimpressive. Sure there are things that looked truly great, like the general scenery, player/npc/weapon models and npc animations. However, there were a lot of things that were just terrible. Texture quality was all over the place with horrible textures for small/random objects and just the general muddiness of how things looked. Lack of dynamic shadows and lights is also quite confusing for a modern engine. Overall it seems like an engine to trick people into thinking it looks good but when you actually get up close you realize that rose was actually a turd.

For every scene like this;

You get a dozen of these;

...imho even UT3 is still more impressive than IDTechV. That game is so lank terrible it's not even funny...

Accidental father of FPS like GL was with StarWars Ep4-6. Looking at just Cryteck 3 you can clearly see that there is more and more people who can do proper and complex engines than just ID back in the day.

Since neither of these where published by Bethesda or Zenimax I dont quiet see the point of ur post.

They were the other major sp fps games in 2011, and they were not so much better than Rage that id should now bow out of the genre.

Doom 4 will be published by Bethesda anyway, the cutting of employees probably has nothing to do with the success or failure of Rage.

Rage wasn't that bad that it would kill id but considering it was in development for 7+years and they only managed to produce an average game with a subpar engine it should give them great cause for concern.
