No, he was only diagnosed with lymphoma last week; he's still kicking.

Also, that pic is wrong in a few places. He didn't just tune his guitar down a lot; he also used lighter strings than most players of that time, which made him use more distortion, giving it a heavier sound. Also, his injury caused him to fret power chords differently, which trained his fingers to find the tri-tone sound (or devil's chord) more easily, and this is what is considered the origin of heavy metal.

What avatar said!!, he's still alive and kicking and is now 63. Wikipedia stays well up to date!! :)

This is true, it's a pity that he might not last, mind you he has lived a successful life!! :D
