Rumour: Microsoft Points to be replaced by real money

This will be a good move IMO. Although according to a thing i read yesterday Sony is negotiating an in-game currency policy for all virtual items traded on PS3 to be implemented for Dust 514. (Source) How funny would it be if XBL discards this model & PSN picks it up. :p

Could be setting up for a Digital Distribution store for Xbox games?

You read my mind!
Its about time consoles start catching up to digital distribution, in a VERY big way.

And I gotta say... if consoles had digital distro, it very well might shove pc out of the way again for a few years.

Even so, I will stick to my PC.

With all the negative press the pre-owned sales have been getting I wouldn't put it past MS.

Consoles do have digital distribution of games. You can buy games on the xbl marketplace using either real money or MS points, and download them straight to your console. That's how I got my copy of BFBC2. I'm sure you can buy full games on PSN as well, but I never have.

Not exactly every game ever, but they are there, and you have the choice of CC or points when you make the purchase

Even so, this will make the system easier and more open (for most) like steam, credit card + internet connection = A for away.

IMO, shitty PSN and XBL games can suck it... I mean full-on triple-A titles on release day.
Like Steam.

I might be wrong and that is the case atm; Haven't touched consoles now for just over a year.

Thats a very backwards attitude. Shadow Complex, I am Alive, Oddworld Stranger's Wrath (an HD relaunch but still) there are countless titles. Also if you where an XNA indie developer you would be singing a very different tune.

In some ways it could be nice, like getting a full on digital store. In other instances though this will suck bigtime cause SA always draws the short stick when it comes to actual pricing. Expect to pay way more just cause its on a SA store. Just look at the current ms point pricing for SA when compared to almost all other countries. At the moment we can still at least use UK points on our SA accounts and it works out much much cheaper than buying a SA code.
If the money system kicks in there will be some serious region blocking and we here in this lovely country get royally screwed.

Flip that burger over.
How successfull would BTGames be if they ONLY sold XNA/PSN titles?

...Just checking...

BTGames is successfull? Last I checked their service was getting worse and worse...

But they don't only sell XBLA (XNA is game dev tool from Microsoft who's titles can be published on Xbox live Arcade) and PSN games, actually they dont sell any, and If Microsoft & Sony ever decided to move into pure digital distribution for games BTGame would not be the only retailer to slowly whither and die.

Not a bad idea. Will need to have some increased security, but will make content more accessible for people with no immediate access to MS Points (you'll be surprised how many don't know how to purchase points online).

I'd definitely like to see them do away with this points nonsense. It's a total rip-off. Designed to be so.

Has to be much cheaper, like current pre-owned prices, or allow lending and borrowing like a real product. At least with Steam they have regular sales, so it is possible to get games at throwaway prices. But even on there some games are $50-$60. I'm not one of those suckers who'll pay that when I can just get the real thing, usually for less, and it gives me more flexibility.

But that's because of those shipping costs and import duties. Or least that was Microsoft's story. Like many they take South Africans for rubes.

They have included PayPal support in the latest update, just not in SA because apparently we don't get a lot of the cool stuff

Oom Matt! We hardly get ANY of the cool stuff. MS are increasingly focusing on the entertainment side of Xbox Live, which we cannot get due to regional issues...

I have a S.A. account and the only thing you can buy with MS points is arcade games and DLC.
All the games is card only so I don't mind.
