Wikipedia lists it as a Sandbox-building game. I just call it Lego-like.

A cursory google led me to one forum where they decided it's closest ancestor is Sim City. I've never played it, so I wouldn't know.

I'm not sure, but I'd reckon a freeform world building sim, or something like that. It's definitely in a genre of its own, but I don't think the genre has been properly defined yet.

I've heard people call it an adventure game, but that doesn't do it any justice. Minecraft is so much more than an adventure game.

I saw Sandbox Puzzle Adventure in one description.
Another guy suggested "First Person Crafting".

But you can play it in 3rd person. I wouldn't say puzzle since its all procedurally generated there isn't any puzzles only natural obstacles.

Nope. The only thing they share is the use of a bike. Paperboy is a bicycle, excite bike is a motocross / scrambler doing tricks and building tracks, racing. It's also a sidescroller, whereas paperboy is an Isometric game about delivering newspapers

Tomb Raider is the first one that jumps to mind, Not to mention Gears of War & Prince of Persia.

Portal was the last original game I played(though it is a fps in a way.)
