Best uncapped broadband for a reasonable price?

I'm a gamer in my free time, and quite an avid WoW player :D. Recently, my dad downgraded from a 2Mbps line with a 10GB cap to a 4Mbps line, but only a 7GB cap. Unfortunately, this is not enough to last us an entire month, but my dad is adamant on having speed over cap, as he only uses it for work. We are currently paying about R300 a month for the data, are there any packages that you can get for more or less that amount, without sacrificing speed? Uncapped would be best, but anything 10GB or more would work as well. I have been looking at Web Africa's deals (specifically the 25GB package), and I am quite impressed, but the fact that I can only use 20% of it during peak hours kinda puts me off. Any suggestions?:)

Yeah, we are currently using IS, but the reason my dad is a bit skeptical about uncapped is because "the line speed varies too much, and you barely ever get the speed you pay for." -Matchstick Sr.

I gotta say, 10GB silver package looks sexy.

Yeah, I have the uncapped 4mb line from afrihost, it's R15 more than the 50GB one. Play WoW a lot too, and haven't had any sorts of lag issues, been hovering around 200ms, as normal. For normal internet browsing and even streaming, the line speed is great, doesn't vary too much. I can always max out my downloads, if the server is good.

How old are you, if you don't mind me asking?

Just a suggestion: Before you hop onto the uncapped internet bandwagon, you might consider determining how much data you really need to satisfy your WoW addiction. It sounds as if you are saying that 10Gb was adequate for you. Do you and your father use the same computer? You say that your father uses it for work: at what times does he work on the computer and use the internet? Do you have some form of income? Perhaps you could scratch together R149 a month for your own 10Gb account [or even the 5Gb account], and log into that account whenever it is your time to use the computer.

I guess you know that when WA speak of off-peak hours, they mean from 19H00 to 07H00 the next morning and all day on weekends and public holidays.

200ms sounds pretty good; on EU servers, or locally hosted private servers?

Turning 16 this year :D

I have been looking at WA's deals, but overall, I think they're just a bit watered down (the possibility, however unlikely it might be, of only having 2GB at my disposal), whereas Afrihost just seems more full-on. I have my own PC, and usually when my dad uses the internet, its after peak hours. Now, any person with an IQ higher that that of broccoli would tell me that a WA package would work best. But, as it turns out, I really think its time to opt for uncapped. One of the reasons I want to have our ADSL upgraded is so I could become a full-blown Steamer (no pun intended) as my friends tell me it is rather bandwidth-hungry, and thus I have been refraining from using Steam. Another thing is I never download ANYTHING if it's over 50MB. The possibility of downloading stuff to my heart's content makes me lean more towards the uncapped option.

I can't spare any income, unfortunately, as I need to use it to buy stuff (according to the strict Boere-regime in out household, if you want something, you buy it yourself) like new hardware and games :D

Afrihost uncapped has throttles you quit a bit. Checkout Web Africa. Iv got a few friends the swear by them. From what iv heard BF3 and Steam usage don't count towards your throttle.

Does that include total Steam usage? My first thoughts were actually that it's only for updates. Also, keep in mind that I am not using it purely for Steam, but for downloads, streaming, and (mostly) MMO's.

I would advice against webafrica until they've gotten their act together and finally just have enough bandwith for their capped and uncapped.

Hi all,

Hopefully this will address the recent issues that have been posted online. We haven’t been ignoring you guys, just spotting what actually needs the attention and getting that sorted.

We’ve spotted and trended:

Gaming:
This seems to mostly lay with SW:TOR. As this is a new game and not available in SA it’s been fairly tricky to identify the traffic and properly prioritise it through our network. We’ve setup some test stations in the office and monitoring things closely to try and get this sorted. We have also included our DPI vendors to get this matched correctly.

Download Plus Hours:
We’ve seen a large spike from the start of Download Plus on both Capped and Uncapped users which seems to be having a negative effect on throughput in general. We have procured further capacity to handle this as well as expanded our already huge monitoring solutions to better track performance during Download Plus.

News Server:
Mentioned before, but we’re busy testing an entirely new News Server. Follow the thread on our forums for some more updates.

We expect to finalise the new system this week.

Thanx for all your feedback in these matters.

If it were up to me, I wouldn't go for Web Africa anyways. Basically its all down to Afrihost and their 4Mbps uncapped vs. their 50GB capped.

At least I hope it is. Still, even if we opt for the 10GB it would still make quite a difference, both in terms of the money we currently pay, as well as the bandwidth available.

Thanks to everyone for replying; I'm finally done with my PowerPoint presentation :D

Im not sure bud. Steam updates would make more sense. Like i said check it out. I havent used them before so i couldnt say.

I think the most solid choice overall would be Afrihost. They just seem to be a bit more set on giving you the internet you pay for.
