I was going to remark that these strips are like the tabloid newspapers of the comic strip world (in other words, trash), but then I realized that tabloids have at least some comedic value.

So I have decided to go with a more accurate analogy. They are like the daytime television home shopping ads of the comic strip world; humdrum, trite, weak, talentless and tasteless, tacky crap.

No, it was right the first time. Those templates & their popularity means you no longer need any real skill to create them and express an idea. Its just the latest in an ever evolving series of cultural memes, not an internet meme;
