Worth upgrading to Ivy bridge? Let me tell you why its not.

So I have been doing a lot of research about Ivy Bridge over the last couple of months.
After going through this

http://www.obr-hardware.com/2012/02/world-exclusive-core-i7-3770k-tested.html

and reading through the results, It just confirmed what I already knew.

Ivy bridge doesn't really bring anything new to the party, Considering the I7 3770K is roughly 10% faster than the already impressive I7 2600K. Now some of you might be thinking, well 10% is a good improvment and it might be worth looking at, well let me stop you right there.

You're gonna end up having to sell you're current I5/I7 Sandy cpu's at a loss, seeing as the 2nd hand market is not kind to last gen chips, also these chips are supposedly gonna cost exactly the same as the current gen chips, Now this might be true for the American market but unfortunately that won't happen in SA. Our suppliers and Resellers think its ok to put huge mark ups on products, seeing as they know we aren't able to get hardware from places like Microcenter or NewEgg.

If you are upgrading from an older pc, and keen to try out something new. I would say give Ivy bridge a skip and buy a 2nd hand Sandy Bridge chip, you'll end up saving quite a lot of cash for some seriously awesome performance.

Although the results from that website, should be taken with a pinch of salt, I still think the results speak of a slightly less power hungry chip, that's only slightly faster at stock speeds, that only offers a slight increase in performance.

Nice, thanks for clearing that up Joker. I was honestly wondering what the point is of Ivy bridge. Won't Sandy bridge come out with PCI express 3.0 support also?

But if you were still on 1156 or 775 socket then would it make more sense to go Ivy or Sandy considering Ivy will be more expensive, either due to Sandy going out because of Ivy or due to SA suppliers?
Now that is the question...

I reckon if you're still running something like a i5 750/760 or a older 775 rig I reckon its def a worthwhile upgrade.
If you wanna save cash and you don't wanna buy 2nd hand hardware, I would recommend waiting for about 6 months after Ivy launches, then buying Sandy Bridge, by then prices should have dropped quite a bit.

As for the PCIe question, yeah there are new boards that support Pcie 3.0
You don't need ivy for it though. I've got a pcie 3 board running a i7 2600k and a 7970, no issues.

Thanks, I'm still rocking a C2D E2400. Planning on upgrading to a 2600k in March/April, was considering an Ivy bridge setup, but I don't want to drop too much cash on a new setup.

I wasn't planning on going Ivy Bridge.. but thanks for the info man.

Think I'll wait for Skynet socket to come out ;)

We don't need to upgrade bud :P
I think Sandy will be strong for another couple of years...I am actually looking forward to Piledriver. Hopefully AMD can fix the single threaded app issue with BD and launch Piledriver in top form. Could be seriously good.

Looks like intel cant make it any smarter than it alreay is, so they making it faster. Reminds me of the Pentium 4 and the pentium D. . .

Im very happy with my LGA1156 i5 760. Think I will see what comes after bulldozer and maybe get that.

Lower power consumption and lower heat are quite nice though. Especially from an OCing perspective (not that Sandy Bridge is anything like bad).

Still, think I'm gonna go Ivy Bridge when it comes out.

Looks like im gonna stick with my i7 2600k for a while. No need to update if i think about it.
Maybe just a Graphics card update.....
