Graphics Card specials... or somehting

So my card is dying... a slow horrible death of continuous artifacts ruining the game's atmosphere for me and the terrible multicolored lines that appear when the card gets hot.

Now I bought a new case and it's got about 5 fans in there so it's got a lot of air flowing through it. And this is giving the card a little bit of more juice, it's not getting hot anymore and I lowered the settings in CCC as low as possible to help it along.

I'm tempted to wait for the new 7000 midrange cards to come out, or Nvidia's new 700's... But this all depends on my card. It's old, 5 years now. It's held out for long and I'm proud of it. But now I have to move on, so it leaves me with two options:

1. Wait till after March.
2. Look for a nice special somewhere and buy that.

Yes i know now is not the best of times to buy a card, but this is for just in case. And this gives us a chance to see who can find the bestest best specials online! Second hand or new, I don't care. There is something I do want though:
It has to be 256 bit or higher.

So does anyone know of anything? Or if you are selling something then put it here! Please?!

Just for the hell, here's the tech details behind my current card: (don't laugh too loud)

*Ati Radeon HD 4670
*1GB DDR3
*128bit
*Zalman cooler

That's about all the excitement the card can take.

Complete system specs... Here's the dealio though: Currently I'm trying to save up to help my fiance out with her machine as she desperately needs something better. So I'm going to for instance buy a new graphics card but I don't want to spend any more on anything else realyl for now, this system will be obsolete soon enough.

Budget... Damn, I'm guessing MAX would be R2000 though I would really prefer something much closer to R1500. Like I said, midrange.

I used the psu calc you linked this morning to work out my power usage: 325W

Specs:

Gigabyte Odin 470W
Kentsfield Q6600
Gigabyte P31 DS3L
6GB DDR2 800
320GB
500GB
ATi Radeon HD 4670

I know, not the best specs, but it's okay for now.

Still not bad, would look at running something like a 6870 with those specs, any higher and I think you might encounter a bottleneck, that said the cpu is a quad core and a really strong one at that.

I would suggest looking for a 2nd hand 6870, Might be able to get you a new one for around R1900.

Thanks Joker, I was hoping for results like that. You made my day! If you see any second hand 6870's let me know. I saw a 6870 asus for R1500 brand new on Monday on prophecy, they've removed it though. I think it might have been a typo.

Exactly what card can you get me for R1900?

I'll have to check to make sure, but its probably gonna be a Sapphire 6870 1GB 256Bit card.
Will let you know if I spot one for cheaper.

Anything helps, on another note: Would it be better to wait till after the release of the new range of cards?

If you're willing to wait then yeah I would say so, but don't expect cheap cards, I reckon the 7850 is gonna cost around R2400. Will be a strong card though..so try save up a bit.

Saving is the name of the game... and hoping my current card doesn't die on me. When it came out I paid R1800 for the card (including delivery) I just cannot believe that, still have the original invoice.

Also I'm thinking if I wait the 6000 range will get much cheaper. I'm relying on this little piece of hope.

6000 Range will not drop in price for at least 6-12 months. I can pretty much promise you that.
So save a bit and try grab a 7850 when it launches. Not to long now :)

Thinking about it now even the 5800 range cards haven't really decreased in price. What's your thoughts on the 5870 Joker?

The prices on those have dropped quite a bit, you might struggle finding one new but you can pick htem up 2nd hand for R1500-R1800, Sold my Asus 5870 Matrix v2 for R1800 about 3 months ago. Again they are seriously strong cards but they are now getting old and you'll continue to lose money on them. Honestly...I would avoid it for now...wait and see what the 7850 offers compared to the 5870 and then decide.

Good point! I'll keep that in mind. I'm probably going to drive you crazy but I'm trying to find out as mush I can now.

What is your opinion on the 6790 range?

They are ok, they are slightly faster than the GTX550Ti cards.
Honestly though I wouldn't buy one right now...Its just to close to release for the new card, 7780 and 7750 launching next week.

That's exciting news! Screw you 6790 then! :D
