Epic thinks there are "too many platforms"

Lack of competition will lean to more stagnation & create a monopoly.

Agreed. I don't really understand why someone would think there's too many platforms. I mean, the majority of games are multiplatform and with the current middleware in place it's not like you need to develop for every platform from scratch.

Hmmm....you do have a point.

The current proliferation of platforms and sundry exclusives can be annoying as one has to be that bit more discerning, but then I am probably greedy/lazy. :o

Imagine only getting games on xbox, no pc, ps3, wii, DS, vita. Now Imagine MS could ask whatever they want for it and as a gamer you wouldn't have an alternative, if you wanted to play you would have to pay up. Exclusives are few and far between. Most titles are multiplat so the idea of a single platform is silly if not outright stupid.

Just the thought of all my games being under the complete control of Microsoft is enough to give me nightmares.

Currently developers pay royalties to develop on anything but the pc. Imagine how much a company like sony or ms could charge if they were the only option available. Now imagine what that would do to the cost of games.

True but those royalties pay for themselves several times over if the title sells well.

No Epic is just trying to write one engine for many very different devices which is an uphill battle.

Epic CEO said:
We’re seeing now iPad sales have surpassed the sales of PCs
OMG! If the CEO believes that then Epic is officially fcked.

The sales of iPads surpassed the sales of any single PC maker. Which isn't all that impressive: There are lots of competitors in the PC space meaning each gets a small slice....not all that difficult to beat. The PC market is still many times larger & will continue to be so.

Surely this guy must have some sense of scale in *his* industry? Fingers crossed that the CEO of Epic isn't involved in the strategic planning... :o

You can change "trying to write" to written. :)

I wouldn't be so quick to just dismiss Tim Sweeney (CEO, Founder and Head tech honcho), he is one fking clever guy and doesn't just spout nonsense.

Of course. My point was that this isn't necessarily a problem for the industry as a whole as the article makes it sound, just for Epic. Microsoft doesn't care how different the PS platform is & how difficult it is to code for both xbox and PS. Epic does.

In this particular case he *is* spouting nonsense, though perhaps the reporter simply recorded the quote incorrectly...who knows. Sure he is a clever guy but that just makes it that much stranger & certainly doesn't improve the credibility of a statement that is clearly factually incorrect.
