Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning review (MyGaming)

I've Spent 30 Hours in this and Loving it. Yeah the story goes a bit gobbeldygook but the addictive gameplay, awesome combat and absolute beauty of the immaculately crafted world deserves to be played by every RPG fan. Kingdom's is the first fresh, non-sequel, IP to hit in a while and by doing well it might show publishers that new franchises can make money.

Personally I find it a bit distressing that the average review scores for this is lower than games like Skyrim, which basically just did well due to its name. Then again, scores aren't really indicative of which game is better than which, only how well a game does what it sets out to do.

Still, I think Skyrim in all its unpolished glory and poorly thought out features and its technical issues pales in comparison to this.

Yeah, I liken Kingdom's to Diablo. It has that same level/looting drive I use to feel while playing Diablo. Sure Diablo's story was good but its wasn't the main pull of the game, doesn't remove it being a great game. Other than a the odd visual hick up or camera issue & the fact that the lock picking skill is pretty much useless & the player has more money that he knows what to do with (I have about 350K gold) its a very polished and well rounded game. Based on what I've played so far I would score Kingdom's at least a 8/10.

I really hope we see more devs taking a gamble and bringing us something new like Kingdoms.

Like Omega I too have been playing it for 30 plus hours and would also give it 8/10. Originally I gave it 75% but the more I play it the more I struggle to not play it. It just keeps asking me to play it again and again.
I really enjoy rpg's from the more immersible games to the pick up and play rpg's but this game really is something I find unique compared to what has and is coming out as of late.
I really do recommend it to pretty much anybody who enjoys anything 3rd person.

How heavy is this on the RPG-ness? Is it quite close to Diablo or Dungeon Siege?

haven't played Dungeon Siege but would say Diablo. You get 1 Skill point and 3 Ability points per level. Skills range from Blacksmithing to Stealth while the Ability points can be freely spread across the 3 Ability trees (Might, Fineness and Sorcery). Beyond that its your general RPG style Looting & killing of Mobs. Only point where it goes more RPGy than Diablo is the dialogue system.

Ah, RPG Lite. My kinda game.

I would say grab the Demo of PSN or Xbox or whatever and try it before getting it. It seems to be a bit of a love or hate title.

Thats what you told me before getting it. Couldn't get hold of the demo, bought the game and 100% don't regret it.

Yeah well its general good advice. I don't like telling people to just get a game, always run the risk that they do and then end up hating it, that is unless I am 100% sure.

If I had to give it a score now, it would be 9/10. 42 hours in and loving every second. I've reset my character 5 times now and I've tried out every weapon/destiny combination I could think of and have found the one that works best for me. Playing a very evenly balanced warrior/mage. I love weakening the enemies from a distance with magic and then going in for the kill with my greatsword or hammer. :D

Well I am playing as finesse (archer) and warrior. Apparently a rare combination as most are going warrior/sorcery.

Im playing finesse/sorcery. I love the Chakrams and my bow. I do like going stealth but I haven't found daggers that can keep up with the Chakrams so yeah.

Playing pure sorcery here. I'm pretty tough, if I do say so myself.

Also, one of the sorcery destinies gives you blink, which replaces Dodge. It's the best skill in the game, if you ask me.

Well I'm finesse/might.. I do a lot of stealth kills with my master crafted daggers and then I play with faeblades and a hammer.. I sometimes get some bow in there but not often...:)

Jeezus where the fuck do you get the time? :wtf:

Haha. What can I say, I have a lot of free time on my hands. The fact that I'm pretty much addicted to the game and can't stop once I've started also contributes to that a lot. :p

I've probably tried most of the possible combinations of classes so far. Finesse & sorcery also work great together, but I'm not a fan of the bow or traps so I ran out of things to put points into and decided to rather go for mage & warrior. Have to agree with Graal on the blink ability, especially after I've unlocked special attacks for my sword and chakrams after blinking - really awesome. Finnesse/sorcery destiny gets a poison blink, which is totally badass.
