ChessConquest - official discussion thread

Just a quick bit of news: I am now an ex-employee, on the job market. I have several possibilities, and am pursuing them. In the meantime, the next two weeks will largely be spent in training as a result of the settlement with my former employer.

Horlicks, I hope you are still up to a game against a somewhat overrated opponent... I have returned your challenge, and look forward to a tough game.

I am analyzing some games that I recently completed and laughing at myself for mistakes made and opportunities missed. Look at the game Beth vs tallfred http://chessconquest.com/index.php?p=viewgame&gameid=10257 after White's 18th move, Nfxg5.

I played 18... Rg6? which gives Black some advantage, but not much. To my utter surprise White resigned despite still having a lot of fight.

The question is, what move does better for Black? I missed it.

Don't peek... Work it out yourself.

OK here it is, as pointed out by Chessmaster
18... Nxd3 19 Qxd3 (nothing better) Qxg5!

This is a really neat resource because if White plays 20 Nxg5 Black wins White's Queen by 20... Bxd3, staying a piece up. The lesson I draw is that I need to be constantly looking for ways to exploit pins, in this case the pin on the Knight on e4.

Hey guys!

Hope you are all having a great weekend! Just one quick question - or should I say debate?
Where are all the girl chess players? And why are there so few woman who play chess? I get a lot of weird looks from people when I tell them vuade ( my husband ) and I spend our evenings playing chess! And why do they have woman chess championships? Sport, I can understand, but chess??

I love your question. To my regret, none of my daughters seemed interested in chess. I cannot coax my wife near a chess set: she says that she knows that she doesn't stand a chance against me :-(

We play board games such as Ticket to Ride, Civilization, Pandemic and Thunderstone instead. There she beats me often enough to keep her happy and for me to need a steady supply of Band-Aids for my ego.

Such is life... I'd have loved to have had a Judith Polgar in the family.

Muerte, Lizel and I had a similar discussion a while ago. Pity she seems to have stopped playing as well. BTW, now I understand as well, i always seem to get a good hiding from both you and your hubby, you both play very well!

Welcome Muerte, nice to see the first female joining the forum ;)

They have separate chess championships for woman, because men are more intelligent and far superior to woman...

Just joking... in our current game you prove this statement to be completely wrong ;)

I sense you have a death wish ;)

Yotta, I get a bunch of emails stating so-and-so has challenged me, but I never see the game reflected in Mygames. Why is that?

What happens is that a player challenges you, but he/she then deletes the game before you get a chance to log in and make a move.

The system currently does not send a second email indicating that the player deleted the game, since we do not want to spam players with too many emails.

Eish, I'm probably going to run out of vacation time. I made the mistake of entering lots of tournaments and now with a super busy schedule and having gone through a time without internet I'm in a bit of trouble.

May we buy extra vacation time? My wife and I are moving to our new house and at work we just launched a new product of which I coded a big chunk of and I'm just swamped. Eh, so yes, I'm prepared to buy vacation time if it doesn't cost too much. Otherwise I'll just have to go make moves without proper calculation and we really don't want that. :)

Dude, you are so good, even if you only have half the time to think I'm sure you'll still make great moves!

PS - good luck with the move!

Haha thanks Fivel. I'm not all that good hey. If I spend a long time calculating then I do well but in live games I suck so much! I took your advice though and just made the moves. Lets hope for the best. :)

Me thinks you worry to much, just play and have fun for the next couple of weeks ;)

Yotta, Why don't we have a rule that each time you enter a tournament you get one day leave added to your credit? In this way you are rewarding active players and avoiding burnout.

You know, you are right. :) That sounds like an excellent idea.

That's another excellent idea! These tournament games get a lot after a while.

Hey and welcome to the forums Muerte! I'm glad to see both you and Vuade here. :)

I have been thinking about leave. It's a brilliant concept, and I thought that a little tuning might make it even better. My thought is that one should get leave more often, but in smaller increments, say two and a half days per month. This should only be given to players who had been active in that month: if they had played just one move in that month that would be active enough for me.

I think that there should be some limit to the amount of leave a person can accumulate because a player might go on a round the world cruise for several months, leaving a whole tournament waiting for him. I suggest that this limit be (surprise) thirty days. In addition, I propose that one starts with ten days leave when joining Chessconquest, and accumulate from there.

Of course the idea of giving leave for entering tournaments is still on the table.

The benefits are that one can build up leave before that holiday, and provides players with more flexibility than the current way: glut of leave at the start of the year and the total lack at the end.

The numbers given here (e.g. 2 and a half days per month increment, 30 day max leave allocation, 10 day leave allocation on joining) are for discussion only. What do you think of the concept? Is it a good idea? Should it be tweaked?

I'll up the leave to 40 days for everyone.

Love the idea that activity is rewarded with something such as extra leave days. In the next version we want to introduce the idea of tokens. By winning a game or getting to a certain level in a tournament, or by being very active, you are rewarded with tokens. These tokens can then used for instance to buy extra leave days (or used on other items).

What do you guys think about introducing such a token concept?
