Using your tablet while driving

The Joker

Thread Killer MKII
So I am on the road a lot, I drive roughly 500km per week, mainly on one single stretch of high way.
Seeing as the whole of SA use this road there is usually bad traffic in the morning and afternoon.

Anyway, I've been seeing more and more people sitting on their Ipad/Galaxy Tab whatever while traffic is at a stand still, then taking their time to put it down and move forward when traffic starts moving again. Taking their eye off traffic and whats happening just to stuff around....

Now that seriously gets to me, I have seen many fatal accidents on this particular stretch of highway and I have seen how a chick drove into the back of another guy's car because she was working/chatting/fucking around on a tablet.

Driving a car is not a joke, you are in control of a 1.5 Ton machine, that can claim the lives of innocent people in the blink of an eye, one lapse of concentration can ruin your life and most likely ruin other lives.

Also if you think this is a joke in any way shape or form, You're clueless and you're license should be taken away.

The Republic of South Africa, located at the Southern tip of Africa is the largest economy on the continent- it also boasts one of the highest traffic accident fatality rates in the world costing billions each year. There are about 10,000 fatal car accidents in South African roads each year- representing about 23 people killed per 100,000 population.

In addition to the fatal crashes about 40,000 people are seriously injured and 110,000 are lightly injured out of a total of 500,000 crashes every year.

I just wish people would drive when they are in the car. If you need to do something else pull over. period.

This.

Also, I submit

reading books, resting them on the steering wheel
texting constantly
updating facebook status - I have actually seen : 'This guy behind is driving like such a dick'
replying to facebook status

I do agree with this.

But then i have to add that I text while I drive. I used to maintain VPN connections for one of STD bank banking systems and it caused me to drive a MINIMUM of 4000Km a month. I am able to judge distance in my peripheral vision perfectly . I must add that when I text i have both hands on the wheel and i text with my fone in one of the arches in the steering wheel, IF it comes to it i just drop the phone and grab hold of the steering wheel.

I also do this only on open road, Not whilst in traffic.

Just no! Nothing is THAT important that it needs you on the phone like that. You may think that all is well and that you really have a great grasp of multitasking behind the wheel, but the truth here is that you don't. That split second you need to drop the phone is the split second that could have prevented an accident.

I spend a fair amount of time on the road on a daily basis, as soon as I am in the car, my phone is in a pocket. If I don't have my headset with me, you go to voicemail. This is rapidly changed my day to day frustration levels because people are learning to rather phone the office instead of bugging the living hell out of me whenever they feel like it.

I know how frustrating it is, I see it every day where people just sit there and fsck around on their cellphones when instead they should be focused on the road. @Dohc - I fully agree all Taxi Drivers should burn in hell!!

I Agree with you 100% here.

Yep I have my tablet in its pouch, on the floor of my car, phone is always in my handbag, far away that I cannot reach it. Most people realise if I dont answer I am driving. The only times my phone is near me is when I use it as a gps. Otherwise I dont bother with it.

Until there is a sudden change in traffic, dog runs out of no where, etc etc.

Well I purchased a nice big Air Horn this morning. Gonna keep it in my car for the bastards that do this.

Seeing as blowing you're horn at them usually makes no difference I wanna see how they feel when they have a high pitched Air horn blowing in their ear.

I sometimes do talk on the phone and feel bad for it, but I never text. That takes your eye off the road, and you mess with your own, but more importantly, the lives of other people.

Joker, it's kak hey.

I drive through the Transkei on a weekly basis. That stretch of the N2 is voted the deadliest road in SA. I see some absolute idiots driving and most of the accidents are people overtaking on blind rises or just not concentrating. I'm pretty sure cellphones etc. have a role to play in it.

I pass tons of accident scenes, a lot of them fatal and even still have bodies in the wrecks. It's not a pretty sight and I honestly wish more road users could SEE the carnage caused by negligence. They would get the shit scared out of them.

I once had a bakkie in front of me overtake a truck and had a head on collision with an oncoming car. Fortunately they didn't hit me in the process. Then a short while after that some government official took his car around a corner too fast, hit an embankment, rolled his car and skid across my lane on his roof.

The worst was an accident I arrived at seconds after it happened. Avanza was speeding around a corner and connected with a truck's wheel. The entire wheel arch + axle was broken off. The truck-wheels nuts split in half from the impact. Found them lying around when we cleared the road after the ordeal.

When I arrived there was a dude lying in the road and a little 3yr old in the 1 lane, which caused me to stop and try to get him to safety. When I got to him he was crying next to his mom's body that was wrapped around a bollard. It was pretty grim, my heart breaks each time I think of that little kid.

After someone came stopped to help me with the kid, I went over to the dude lying in the road to put a cloth of something over his face because people were driving by and staring. When I got close he was moaning, honestly thought he was dead. Anyway, tried to help stop the bleeding since his ear was ripped off clean and I could see his skull through the gash in his head. (Always wear seatbelts, kids) It felt so weird having people drive past staring at you while driving over the guy's blood and just having this detached sense about them.

Anyway, after a few minutes of trying to stop the bleeding I felt his pulse weaken and eventually stopped all together. Such a surreal feeling having someone in pain and the next moment you're holding a corpse.

I don't enjoy speeding, but after that scene I just went and sat in my bakkie for 30mins. It's a mind fuck. Having rolled my 1st car a few years back while driving back from CT, I can honestly say accidents are out there just waiting to happen to ALL of us. Nobody is exempt. Hell, when I was 13 we were stationary at a traffic intersection and got nailed from behind by a truck going full speed.

Anyway, pay attention boys and girls and learn to think for those AROUND you. And remember, the only way you can try and be safe on the road is by sacrificing your right of way.

Reminds me of this accident right after I went Biking,2 people in the bakkie and 2 sitting in the rear holding near the quads and bikes, then on the way home a other bakkie pulling a open trailer on the other side of the road's rope came lose (FKING ROPE TO SECURE A TRAILER) and the trailer started going sideways toward us...our driver turned our bakkie a little so it goes over sideways and non of the things inside the trailer fall on us....then the driver of the trailer didnt even stop, just drove off

Then their was a ambulance asking if anyone was hurt,he looked so surprised when we said no,and when u looked at the grass next to the road u could see knives and cupboards and plates the trailer was carrying!....then a few days after the incident I was so afraid of using a vehicle or crossing a busy road

a bit of topic and long but....true story
