Leaked Assassin's Creed III artwork outs the game's location

Meh, not sure how I feel about this new setting (if it really is the new setting)... part of the appeal of AC was it's awesome historic locations, places you don't often find games set in - the American Civil War doesn't have that same appeal for me but i guess we'll see how it shapes up

I agree there, although Civil war does have massive potential - and it's about time the series moves to a entirely new continent.

Still, I would love to have seen a 19th century London setting. Lots of hookers there as well.

I hope this isn't true, there is just nothing appealing about the American civil war. Most of the historically rich locations in the states are in the original northern colonies and the civil war is fought in the rural south.

Not to mention America is just overdone considering the thousands of movies each year set there, rather give me something fresh and interesting like maybe pre-Germany Prussia before World War 1 or Tsarist Russia where you could throw in all sorts of things like Anastasia and Rasputin.

True that. World War I would be awesome.

You are all fogetting the overall story arch of AC games, the whole Templar's vs Assassin's. The American Revolution/Civil War has alot of conspiracy theories regarding Freemasons, Illuminant, etc. IMO its the perfect place to set a AC game.

I was hoping for the Hong Kong setting they were considering. A lot more interesting than the Civil War. In fact, just about everything is more interesting than the civil war. And that includes stink bugs.

Also, they should just change the definition of 'leak' to 'intentionally made available'. Nowadays everything gets 'leaked'.

The American revolution and civil war are two completely different things. The revolution might actually be interesting since a) it's fought in the North b)involves both England and France. So here you would actually have architecture and interesting environments where as the civil war you have cotton fields.

I'm don't think the Native Americans were too involved with the original colonies to be important during the revolution and only really came into the picture once the expansion west started to happen so I doubt that artwork would point to the revolution rather than the civil war.

That picture makes it hard to narrow down the exact time period between Revolution and Civil War hence the /.

HOWEVER....

That flag behind him is the Betsy Ross Flag and, according to Wikipedia it was designed during the revolution.

The Betsy Ross flag is an early design of the flag of the United States, popularly attributed to Betsy Ross, using the common motifs of alternating red-and-white striped field with five-pointed stars in a blue canton. The flag was designed during the American Revolution and features 13 stars to represent the original 13 colonies. The distinctive feature of the Ross flag is the arrangement of the stars in a circle.

Also

During the American War for Independence, many Native Americans sided with the Americans, but a majority supported the British. The crown promised to protect native lands from encroaching American settlers. Many Native Americans were partially assimilated into the American colonies

Hmmm interesting. To be honest just about any American time period is more interesting than the civil war. :)

That image is based on the painting of Washington Crossing the Delaware.

To quote
Washington Crossing the Delaware is an 1851 oil-on-canvas painting by German American artist Emanuel Gottlieb Leutze. It commemorates General George Washington's crossing of the Delaware River on the night of December 25–26, 1776, during the American Revolutionary War. That action was the first move in a surprise attack against the Hessian forces at Trenton, New Jersey in the Battle of Trenton.

Update:

Yup American revolution.

In any case, this proves just how far Ubisoft is willing to drag this franchise out. Remember, at some point there's still going to have to be a game detailing Desmond's exploits. He can't continue training indefinitely.
