So I am currently with WebAfrica and they have been a very good service provider in general. However it seems that the network is taking a rather hectic beating and thus we get to suffer with bad shaping rules.

I am looking for a decent ISP where I can game online (mostly MMO's) with decent latencies and most importantly, none of this horrendous shaping rules.

Who are you guys using and what are you paying in a month for how much bandwidth ?

I use MWEB uncapped 1Mb and while it is a shaped service it's only p2p that get's shaped and not very aggressively. I've played a multitude of MMO's on this connection and recently it's been absolutely flawless.

Thx, how is their Acceptable usage policy affecting your day to day use of the line ? I download approx 50gb worth of data in a month when really pushing it. But just need to see how it affects normal use.

Well they never shape HTTP only p2p. I average around 120GB pm and I go many days without downloading a thing, maybe just the odd youtube video.

i get some of my internet from FNB Connect and i must say i hardly ever get lag except at the end of the month or between 6:30 and 9 some week nights. also its linked to my FNB checque account and i can use ebucks to purchase more bundles or a monetary amount of internet. plus depending on the spending on my checque account i also get free internet. i have over the past 6 months received a free gig every month. not too sure if they do shape, as i usually just put the downloads on and then go do something else for a couple of hours.
Telkom is my main ISP though as i got a reasonably good deal on the line rentals and internet package form them.

Which is one of my main reasons for never going uncapped :p

It forces me to be disciplined with my usage, and I almost never have latency issues (apart from that horrible episode with congested exchanges which I can't lay at WA's door).

Nimatek, from my experience this is basically what I have done : cancelled Mweb because of their crap uncapped 4Mb package (had it for two months only; couldnt take it anymore).. most of the time crawling speed browsing and bad bad latency for international gaming (talking about 280ms minimum (if its a good day) for Heroes of Newerth | that is near the brink of being unplayable). [Maybe ppl in Cape Town have more privilages from Mweb :(, so what Isengard says will apply more to you than what Im saying].

I have switched over from Mweb 4Mb uncapped to Web Africa 4Mb uncapped, and this I will say : with all the frustrations and throttling going on and having to so watch out for downloading too much, from an international gaming experience Web Africa wins faaaaaaar, with HON pings @ 240ms (and constant, something Mweb's account failed to do very consistantly most of the time to EU servers, as well as Guild Wars.. Ive rarely seen the green ping indicator before using this account (sub 250ms) and on this account its mostly constant 200-320ms. Yes, Web Africa frustrates me with their limited download / throttling but for me, used both of them.. will rather stay with Web Africa personally.

As for horrendous shaping rules, well please let me know when you find one!!

Trust me, the experience in Cape Town on MWEB is muuuuch better than most other regions. I'll happily post latency screens from Guild Wars and Rift.

No throttling or 'rolling windows' on Mweb
98% of the time I have 280 ping to Dungeons and Dragons Online
I average about 90-140gb a month

Mweb 4mb uncapped is the best option in my opinion.

P.S - the difference between 240ms and 280ms is almost too minuscule to be noticed so pffffft @ that weird reasoning.

Would like to ask you to learn to read though, strange thing I purposely put some text in bold for this exact reason; yet people fail to read properly. There is a difference between minimum 280ms with constant spikes and 240ms being just consistent. L2R pls

Anyway, what you guys are saying is really not my experience with Mweb, I guess its true what I said : the bigger cities get more priority or something.. truely a vast difference of what my experience was with them. So Nimatek your in CT, then Mweb could be the best option.

Pffft Lies! Mweb sucks donkey balls and my experience with them was nothing short of horrible! Connection speeds so crap slow you can't even browse, already checked the phone line and exchange issues. 1 week of good speed and 3 weeks of not being able to do shit, that's Mweb.

WebAfrica has been better than Mweb, but not really that much. Pings are far better than Mweb and at least I know when I will get throttled, but still most of the time, but far less than Mweb, I have lag and can't play my games.

I'm still looking for a decent ISP with a uncapped service. So let me know when you find one.

@ OP -

The only thing you can do is test ...... ask Mweb for a test account (think they give you a week). Seeing as a small mob has had bad experiences, see if it works for you first.

Soul - By and large the majority of people have no shaping issues, slow issues, latency issues with Mweb so to say because you did it's all bad is ........ well. I had shit with Webafrica, doesn't make me say everyone with WA suffers.

Well I host my line with WA and have a small 2gig capped account with them, but I use MWEB uncapped 1mbps for everything now.

And it owns. I hardly ever experience any issues, and when I'm not gaming online I'm downloading constantly. I average about 20gigs for gaming traffic and over 100gigs a month other stuff. My one mate pulls over 200gigs (ul+dl) on a 1mbps account with mweb with no issues.

Just my experience, but its awesome.

Let's be clear, MWEB sucks depending on where you live. If you're in Cape Town I'd say it's the absolute best value for money.

I never had a chance to test MWEB's lines - I was put off by their service when I initially tried to sign up.

The other thing that puts me off uncapped is the fact that in order to get anything close to the price I'm paying at the moment, I'd have to drop my line-speed to 1Mbps. Since I'm cruising on a 10Mpbs line at the moment (speedtests put me at anything between 8.5 - 9Mbps), I'd pretty much rather shoot myself in the foot.

Well it is all bad in my experience. I can't very well comment on how your experience with any of these companies has made my experiences with them better or worse.

It applies to you too, saying it's all good, obviously isn't the case.

My experience's were bad with Mweb, horrible as I said. WA is better, not much, but just better.
