Valve: Steam Box isn't happening

This topic has sparked much interest over the last couple of days.
In my mind, Valve is the perfect company to enter the console market. I don't think that this will be a bad idea.

It's not a console, it's a small form factor PC with Steam running big picture mode.

I have read that, yes. Think about it though...who its the next logical competitor to enter the console gaming market, if something like that should happen? Apple? No. They have tried that. No one else is interested or already have the following to do something like this.

We don't need a Valve Box, personally I think that steam should remain as a content delivery system, but it would be nice to see Steam on XBox and PS3, even better would be if you can purchase a steam title and gain the ability to play it on multiple platforms. Things like Skyrim comes to mind, buy it on Steam, play on the platform of your choice.

You have quite a nice idea. Although PS3 and Xbox360 already have their own content delivery systems built into their online networks.

As for the second part of your statement, it would be nice, but it is extremely unlikely to happen.

Valve already did this with Portal 2, if you bought the PS3 version you got the PC version for free. Of course this didn't work the other way round for a few reasons, namely that it's not a downloadable title on PS3 and that Sony would probably not allow it. The 360 does come into play because Microsoft would not allow Steam on their console.

As I said this wouldn't be a 'console' it would just be a branded PC. The Big Picture Mode is really what people should be focusing on, a TV/gamepad friendly way to interact with Steam which would let anyone easily setup and play games on their TV using their PC's.

In my opinion the if Valve were to release the Steam Box, it would almost definitely cause quite a stir and at least there would be some competition for Microsoft and Sony regarding the console market. It would be really awesome if the idea could be made a reality though.
