Lightning storm, Lan port dead

Rain Moodly

Hi All

So we struck by lightening, router got fried, now the lan cable from the router that was connected to my pc lans port, got my lan port fried :(, the port is dead, not being picked up at all in hardware manager.

Now my concern is... obvioulsy a surge went thruogh the lan cable into my pc lan port, now is it just my lan port thats damaged, or could there be other damage done to my mobo?.

The pc is working fine btw, just the lan port is dead. maybe the surge just damaged the lan port and stopped there. not effecting other components on my mobo?

It most likely just damaged the lan port. If you're pc is insured, give them a call and explain to them what happened.
The motherboard will most likely be replaced with a new one.

Just get a PCI network card...its what i did when mine went wonky. They're like R80 or something ridiculously cheap for a 100mbps card.

Happens a lot with mine and my WUG connection. i just replace it with a cheap network card.

Yip same here. . . seems on-board lan ports are the weakest component.

Exact same thing will happen to a pci lan card, its because of the line running into it.
Best advice unplug you're line when you leave in the morning. oh and HAAI oom Grim ::

I think the other option might be to get a UPS that's got a landline port in it, plug it in there and rout it from there to you Router and PC. That's what we do at work. You know surge protection is really cheap, and some of them even have RJ45 ports in them.

OR you do th esimple and proven method of sorting this out .

Its called a WIFI dongle.

YOu use it and connect to your router and sorted.

The odds of you getting nommed by lightning via the power in your house is close to nothing. IT will take a Direct hit to your house.

Its almost always the telephone line.

You need to get a PCI lan card for lans though.

Regarding anything else fried id say that you should play a game for 30 minutes. IF your pc shows no lag or any behavior that it had prior to the hit , Worry not.

Dont waste your money on a ups.

Got a direct hit on the telephone line and my pc got poppep through the standard surge protector from telkom the ellies surge protector i bought and my ups. My router that was behind all of this still got hit so hard that it burst open on the top .

You cant stop lightning, Unless you use WIFI :D

and any one that is going to come " he is going to lag on WIFI " go hang yourself

Same thing happened to my moms pc so ordered her a wireless USB dongle and used that instead since its way easier that way.

Got mine from Uniterm Direct

Agreed on two parts. Unplug lan cable when lightning storm approaches and just buy a pci network card (can even check for a 1 gigabit card while you're at it). Good luck. Glad your whole system was fried lol.
