MSI Radeon HD 7970 Lightning Overclocked to 1800 MHz Core, 7.70 GHz Memory

The Joker

Thread Killer MKII
If you thought MSI made too much song and dance about the product design of its R7970 Lightning, particularly the GPU Reactor module, think again. When augmented with liquid nitrogen cooling, the card has the electrical muscle required to sustain 1.7V, and facilitate a staggering 1800 MHz core clock speed, with 1925 MHz memory (7.70 GHz GDDR5 effective), churning out a gargantuan memory bandwidth of close to 370 GB/s, all thanks to the genius of Swedish proverclocker Elmor.

This R7970 Lightning on 'roid-rage was stable enough to bag a 3DMark 11 (performance preset) score of P15035 points. The rest of the test-bed consisted of an Intel Core i7-3960X Extreme Edition six-core chip clocked at 5207 MHz, with 4 GB (4x 1 GB) DDR3 memory clocked at 2314 MHz, and MSI Big Bang XPower II motherboard, to seat it all. Perhaps this is an indication that AMD Radeon HD 7900 can work wonders on potent non-reference designs, such as MSI's R7970 Lightning.

So we can except you to stock them soon like this ? :)

I so want 2 of these...Will give suppliers a call on thursday and see if they are available yet and what pricing is like.
Will add that is under LN2 so not realistic for everyday use..but under water I reckon they'll clock just as well, could possibly hit 1500...Mmmmm

Man..that is some serious clocking lol

oh please, my mom can run faster then that lol.
Do you think they will release a 7990 version of this overclocking capability?

Lmfao :D

Neah the 7990 won't be able to clock like that. Dual Gpu's are usually downclocked.
Specs on the 7990 are awesome btw...6GB video memory 768Bit..Its gonne be a monster!!

Yeah with a monster price though. 2 7970's or a 7990? considering the price difference with 7990 probably being cheaper?
Actually I would be interested to know, would it be worth buying a top end 5 - 6k gpu compared to buying 2 or 3 mid range cards when needed each time a new series is released or skipping depending on how far a gpu advances in performance.
I mean my 5770 is good to go till end of year probably on medium but what comes next as far as best decision?

2x 7970's will out perform a single 7990. That's just how its always been..that said the 7990 will most likely be around R2000 less than 2x 7970's.

Next question, I think its wise to almost always buy the most powerful card you can afford. Multi card setups being headaches...I have run plenty of multi card rigs in my life time and there are almost always issues.
If you're happy playing on medium and its running fine for you I don't see why you should upgrade, Although I will say if you are planning on upgrading soon..the 7870 is a damn nice card...slight overclock and it runs with a GTX580 no problem and tis a good R1000 cheaper and the price will most likely drop a bit more within the coming weeks.

Well for me I have to wait till I have paid off most of my tele that I bought, still owe nearly 5k on that so it will be a while before I can think of buying a new gpu. A new gpu means a new psu and probably case first. On that psu calculator it says I need 435W or so to run my rig, but I have been told that it is starting to push my psu already so I don't think that can be avoided unless I am mistaken? What are the physical dimensions like with the 78xx compared to the 5770, would a new case be a necessity?

Which psu have you got mate?
And no the 7870 isn't a super long card, its a bit bigger than the 5770 as far as I know.
On the other front, remember the new cards draw less power..which is one of te big selling points.

Its a coolermaster 500W, not a very good one considering it came with the elite 335 case and both costing me around 800 or so in 2009. From what I know the 5770 was very light on fuel which is what made it such a big seller so if I am apparently already pushing boundaries then it kinda shows how my psu is a bit lacking.
