Kicking the habit

So I have been smoking for the past 10 years. Never really been a heavy smoker as I on average only smoke a max of 10 cigarettes a day or so. But enough is enough as this sh!t is getting expensive.
I decided to invest in one of those electronic cigarettes, Puff away - hawk glide to be exact.
Now I want to know what peoples thoughts are with this method of anti smoking is, does it work, what are your thoughts of them or what other ways have people successfully quit the habit.

Well all the best bru. Good luck.

I've seen some okes just go cold turkey and never touch another one, others I've seen with patches/gum galore and they still can't stop.

I still believe that you need to want to really stop.. not because of the money but you really want to stop...

I smoke +-30 a week, and I can sometimes go for a week without having one smoke. Then people tell me "it should be easy for you to stop", while in fact I believe it makes it more difficult for me to stop. I have no will to stop, I enjoy smoking as I do now and I am not going through 20-30 a day as some of my friends.

I think I will quit when my wife is pregnant and she needs to stop, that is a good reason...

I agree with TBlaar. If you want to stop, you need to have the will and desire to stop otherwise you will just go back to it after a while.

The best and also the most difficult way to do it is to quit cold-turkey and deal with the withdrawal. Everything else just prolongs the, "Am I really ready to do this?" feeling and may lead to you cutting down, but never stopping.

In the end it's your decision but you have to have the determination and the right mindset otherwise you'll just be setting yourself up for failure.

Also, on another note: The collector's edition of Risen 2 is up on Kalahari :p

Did your mrs put you up to it as well?? :)

I quit after 10 years of heavy smoking. I smoked all day everyday. I stopped for 4 years and like a doos started again. I quit AGAIN and have now been smoke free for 5 months.

The only way I managed to quit was using medication. My first quit I used Zyban, not recommended as it seriously fucks with your head.

My more recent quit I used some new stuff called Champix, and it worked great. Significantly reduces the side effects of quitting and just takes the edge off. But as mentioned above you have to have the will power to kick the habit.

To this day I still crave. It never really leaves you.

I really do want to quit not only because of costs but also I need to live healthier, kinda need to stop before its too late anyway. Yeah I know some people quit cold turkey pretty well. Most successful I have been with that is 6 days, more recently I get maybe a day without a cig.
Since being on this puffaway I have been having maybe 3 a day which is better but still not where I would like to be at. I end up smoking coz the battery in it keeps going flat and it takes a long time (especially long when you crave nicotine) to charge, that is about 8 - 9 hours.

Damnit why did you have to spoil my thread with that news, now I have to go take a look.../ must not give in to cravings./
Ah screw you :D

One of the things I don't like about smoking is the taste, never really have liked it. This puffaway has a better taste but doesn't have tar which is why I don't mind replacing cigs with that just obviously not smoke it as much as cigs.
My idea is to lessen smoking of cigs down so much that it stops while replacing it with puffaway, then start having less of that since it isn't as addictive.
/Well here is to a perfect idea

@Syco, actually I put her up to doing it lol, she is a heavier smoker then I am

I have one word of advice which has helped me quit in the past.

* Do it while you are on holiday.

I have quit about 3 times and each time the dry season lasting more than a year. I am also a well seasoned smoker of ±15 years or so. There is no other way. During working hours and after hours humdrum of normal life Ciggis are a farking godsend. I love them for what they are as well as the act of smoking. It is the nicest habit to have and I thoroughly enjoy it(Sometimes pipe, hand rolled or store bought).

I tend to quit for a substantial amount of time during and after the December holidays. The entertainment and outdoorsyness of the holiday season take your brain off of the smokes. Most times I find myself smoking cause there is just nothing better to do.

Besides for the holiday advice. Just do it if you really want to. Don't let others pressure you into quitting, especially ex-smokers. They are the most evangelical bunch of bastards out there and every time I get a lecture from one I punch them in the face. Just do it. Thank them afterwards for taking your mind of smokes for a few minutes while you tweeze their teeth from your knuckles.

:D

My wife quit by using a nicotine mouth spray she got from the pharmacy. I think it was 3 bottles that each last a week, everytime you want a smoke you spray, essentialy 'replacing' the habit. Each bottle had a bit less nicotine content than the last.

It worked for her and she hasn't smoked once since which was 6 years ago.

i think the stuff was called Quit.

Yeah, it's all mental ..... don't have the will to stop and you won't. Cold turkey method is how I went and after 2 or 3 months of craving, that was it, out of my life forever. It really is a good step giving it up, never thought it myself until I did it :)

I have never smoked cigarettes in my life (due to childhood asthma) but have been smoking rollies for the past 3 years. I stopped for about 6 months and resumed due to a conscience decision that I enjoy smoking...that sounds bad.

When I am at home (alone) I tend to smoke alot...especially after a HON session. Quitting depends entirely on the person. If you don't want to smoke you wont.

Just my 2 cents anyways...

*Note* Written whilst having a puff :D

How can you play HON and not want to kill every living thing on the planet? My rage factor goes from "Everyday Nirvana" to "Hitler / steroid laden pro-wrestlers time of the month" after the first 5 minutes of play.

Yeah, busy trying to quit.

I reckon best way is cold turkey. I don't doubt that meds and pills and sprays and sweets etc could all help to kick the smoking habit, but I can't help but feel that you simply replace on habit with another.

I want to quit because I need to quit. My health is screwed. Had bronchitus 4 years in a row now. Waking up and coughing up phlegm balls is really not attractive to anyone. Running more than 23cm and then be out of breath? No thanks. And possibly one of the main reasons, R1000 a month on smokes? Crazy. That's more than my petrol budget!!!! Insane actually.

What could you do with a R1000 a month extra?

Dunno about it being a 4 year Bronchitis bru, sounds a lot like Emphysema ....... go have it checked out if you can. If nothing else it will put your mind at ease.

Quitting because you realise your health is suffering is the most telling step in actually quitting, good one :)

I've quit in the past, it was the worst 5 minutes of my life
I smoke heavily, on average 40+ a day at this stage

My wife, who used to smoke but less suit using Champix, I tried that as well but got all of ht major side effects, including increased blood pressure, constant nausea and incredible mind numbing fatigue
Although this may sound bad I was assured that I was in the minority regarding these side effects, so perhaps try Champix and see how it goes for you

In regards to quitting, I am considering it and will probably try sooner rather than later to quit myself

Hahaha, not continous bronchitus. Hahaha! Had 4 incidents. But yeah, it's time to quit.

Haha, I'm familiar with that scenario.

I managed to quit for about three months a few years back after having a tonsillectomy. Then, like an idiot I started again when I finished college.
I've tried to quit many times over the years and have managed an average of three days before I start going totally nuts.

I smoked for 23 years and quit at 30-40 a day 7 years ago.

I initially used Zyban but left it after about two weeks.

I have not touched a cig since and have a new motto that I won't put anything in my mouth that I have to suck on.
