Gmail.

A spate of ISP hopping showed me the impracticality of ISP email accounts.

You probably should have added in a third option for those of us that use dedicated Domain Email accounts that we own and manage ourselves

Domain emails accounts. That way you always have great speed and access and your email account never needs to change.
I do have a gmail account for backup, but that is only used for registering on forums or sites where I think there is a possibility that I might get spammed.

Gmail all the way.

Google Calendar, Docs, iGoogle, my Android phone (contacts, etc).

It has, by far, more features than any domain or ISP e-mail account could ever offer and it would take a helluva lot for me to ever want to change it :)

How many of you have webmail accounts and use them intead of your ISP account?

Me, I only use my Gmail.

[X] Domain

Neither. I own my own domains with their respected email packages. That's the way to go....

If you have your own domain, how does the email bit work? What else do you need?

You buy the domain. Then you get a email hosting plan. From there you have full control over your email ( I have ) and you obviously need an email client. I use Zoho mail as they allow multiple pop accounts as well as apps like docs.

Register and Buy a Domain
Select a Hosting Package - Use the server control features to setup and maintain your Email accounts
Instead of using a POP account, setup your server to use IMAP protocol, it allows complete syncing of calendars, contacts and mails between multiple devices and tracks changes across all of them

I also have my own domain as my main email account. I auto-forward all mail received on that to my gmail account.

Works perfectly for me.

I use Gmail, Yahoo and Aim email accounts

Aim is for personal use since it has less spam than the rest
