The Voters Have Spoken: EA Is Your Worst Company In America For 2012!

Whether it's on a console, a PC, a smartphone or tablet, hundreds of millions of people play video games every day. Yet most mainstream media covers the industry the same way it treats adult dodge ball leagues and cat fashion shows (both noble ventures, but neither of them multi-billion dollar industries). And the only time you hear legislators discuss video games is when some politician decries them as the death knell for all things righteous in the world (hint: they're not). Now, after years of being ignored and relegated to steerage, game-players have voted to send a message to Electronic Arts and the gaming business as a whole: Stop treating your loyal customers like crap.

After more than 250,000 votes, Consumerist readers ultimately decided that the type of greed exhibited by EA, which is supposed to be making the world a more fun place, is worse than Bank of America's avarice, which some would argue is the entire point of operating a bank.

To those who might sneer at something as "non-essential" as a video game company winning the Worst Company In America vote: It's that exact kind of attitude that allows people to ignore the complaints as companies like EA to nickel and dime consumers to death.

For years, while movies and music became more affordable and publishers piled on bonus content — or multiple modes of delivery — as added value to entice customers to buy, video games have continued to be priced like premium goods.

There have even been numerous accusations that EA and its ilk deliberately hold back game content with the sole intent of charging a fee for it at a later date. It's one thing to support a game with new content that is worth the price. It's another to put out an inferior — and occasionally broken — product with the mindset of "ah, we'll fix it later and make some money for doing so."

New, independent game companies do pop up all the time, but the cost of entering the market has historically been too expensive, making these indie innovators prime targets for acquisition by mega-publishers like EA. Our hope is that the growth of app-based gaming and downloadable games will continue to make it easier for developers to get their products out without the backing of companies that don't care a lick about the people who fork over their cash.

Oh well, Worst Company In America 2012 is officially in the books. All that's left to do is send off the Golden Poo to EA.

Traditionally, the Poo has been delivered on its little red pillow. But this year, we'll give EA three different color options for its pillow, though in the end it's still the same old Poo.

Thanks again to everyone who voted. See you all again in about 49 weeks!

I don''t agree. Kotaku did a run down of the finalist.

Electronic Arts

  • Sells downloadable content. Sometimes on release day.
  • Uses online passes to charge people who buy used games.
  • Owns the company that wrote Mass Effect 3's ending.

Walmart

  • Often criticized for running small businesses and independent retailers out of business.
  • Working there is apparently tantamount to actual hell on earth.
  • There's an entire Wikipedia page called "Criticism of Walmart."

AT&T

  • Straight-up terrible phone signal service.
  • Unanimously booed at Sony's E3 conference last year (when Sony's Jack Tretton announced that 3G versions of the PlayStation Vita would exclusively use AT&T's network), presumably because of terrible service.
  • Can't even get service in my own goddamn apartment.

Bank of America

  • Paid $137 million to settle an accusation that it defrauded schools, hospitals, and other state government organizations.
  • Tried to charge customers a $5 monthly fee for debit cards, which President Obama promptly attacked.
  • Keeps getting sued for trying to ruin peoples' lives.

Which is worse? EA's DLC and Online Passes or a Bank that defrauds people?

I understand many people are unhappy with EA for a great many reasons but to call it the worst company in the US seems disproportionate given the competition, especially considering that Games is a Luxury item where as a Bank or Wallmart provide services you can consider essential. I think people need to get their priorities straight.

Only reason EA "won" is because a whole bunch of nerds, who live on the internet, is still pissed off about ME3's ending. If there had been no ME3 Ending nerd rage I would put money on EA not "winning".

Geez, imagine our president attacking the bank for monthly fees

Anyway, agree with Omega - there are far worse companies out there, companies whose evil stretches far further than funding a game you didn't like/pushing out DLC etc - and lets face it - it was all because of 'that ending'.

I'm not saying EA isn't a soulless corporation (because they probably are), but if I had a choice to shut down either of the above mentioned for dubious business practice, it sure as hell wouldn't be them.

EA responds to "worst company" label from Consumerist

EA this week was selected by more than 250,000 votes on The Consumerist as the "worst company in America for 2012." EA has just provided GamesIndustry International with a response to this "Golden Poo Award."

"We're sure that bank presidents, oil, tobacco and weapons companies are all relieved they weren't on the list this year. We're going to continue making award-winning games and services played by more than 300 million people worldwide," said John Reseburg in EA Corporate Communications.

EA earned 64 percent of the vote in the final round, going up against Bank of America. The Consumerist commented, "Readers ultimately decided that the type of greed exhibited by EA, which is supposed to be making the world a more fun place, is worse than Bank of America's avarice, which some would argue is the entire point of operating a bank."

"To those who might sneer at something as 'non-essential' as a video game company winning the Worst Company In America vote: It's that exact kind of attitude that allows people to ignore the complaints as companies like EA to nickel and dime consumers to death."

Frankly, this whole vote on The Consumerist appears rather ridiculous on its face. Forbes summarized it best:

"The plights of the gaming industry simply don't compare with BofA's actions resulting in people literally losing their homes and savings... EA is widely loathed, and they've brought that reputation down on their own heads, but they're loathed for reasons that pale in comparison to basically any of the big mortgage companies and banks involved in the housing crisis and financial collapse."

EA may not be liked by some, but it's worth noting that the company has been very progressive in its support of LGBT content, offering players of its BioWare games like Mass Effect and Star Wars: The Old Republic the option to engage in same-sex relationships. The publisher has been the target of an anti-gay campaign from Christian fundamentalists as a result.

This is just the internet at it's trolling best. EA is far from the worst company in the US.

This part in particular I think is also one of the root causes of this. EA and BioWare have received huge amounts of blow back from the whole same-sex relationship option.

I think i said it when the Metacritic Bombers kicked the crap out of ME3 5 hours after release; This is why "user feedback "is moving very rapidly on the opposite direction of representing of the true quality of an Item/Product/Company/Service.

Did anyone else notice that EA is the only games company of this "list". Where is Activision with its COD: Elite or idiot CEO vowing to milk gaming? Where is Ubisoft with its idiotic DRM and disregard for the PC Gamer (!the humanity!)?

Like I said with the whole ME3 Ending Petition thing; People need to think about what they are "voting" for beyond the short term. Think of the bigger picture, sure you may get your ending changed but what effects will this move have on the future of artistic freedom not only in gaming but in films or book? Similarly by tell EA they are Shit but leaving Activision, Ubisoft or any one of the other companies that gamers love to hate on for whatever reason off this list is saying; "its ok, your not so bad, carry on." much loader than its saying "look at what we do to companies we don't like."

I am just surprised that companies like McDonalds etc who have been sued or put in court because people are complaining that they are getting obese didn't even feature.
One positive thing for EA is at least they will know have a high brand recognition lol, Marketing done, now just a Public Relations drive lol

EA the worst company? Makes zero sense. They are responsible for some of the most highly rated games being released and its probably awesome to work there. Americans(generalising) are just dumb, they're all a bunch of trolls who continuously buy and support EA's products anyway.

I usually get great service from EA online. They also usually have the cheapest games at retail.

Origin..

That's why EA fails, also for the way they treat gamers that complain on the EA forum, banning their EA forum account which means they are banned from Origin, which means they lose all the games that they paid for with their own money...That's theft.... EA are total dicks, just like Ubisoft. They should have come in joint 1st for twats of the year.

If the vote was solely for gaming companies, I would agree.

But up against Bank of America and Walmart in the greater scheme of things - it's ridiculous.
