Norwegian mass-murderer used video games to train and plan his attack

So what exactly does one gain from taking a year out to play WoW? How does it prepare you for killing people? And MW's aiming sytems? Hitting dudes from across the map with a pistol... its a wonder he killed anybody.

NO!!! WHY ARE YOU REPEATING THIS NONSENSE!!!

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/04/19/breivik-testifies-about-gaming-press-ignores-the-facts/

Never reprint anything from mass media that has to do with games before first checking everything carefully since almost every time you will see it's full of sh*t.

Did you read our article? It came from the Reuters feed and stated the facts plainly and in a neutral manner. Gaming wasn't blamed for anything - was merely reported that he played these games.

Call of Duty for training purposes, as per his testimony, and World of Warcraft to take a bit of a sabbatical from being a lunatic before he went off the deep end and murdered people.

I did read the article and I saw it came from Reuters, even more reason to check it. :) It's less biased than some others but it's still not neutral nor completely representative of the facts.

Let's start with the title.

Norwegian mass-murderer used video games to train and plan his attack
He played one video game which he related to his attack (Modern Warfare), not video games, he said he used it to train himself to kill police officers, which you can't do in the game. All of that only happened after he had already planned and decided to carry out his attack. World of Warcraft was just about irrelevant, he could have spent that year learning how to ice skate.

He told a court on Thursday that he used computer games to prepare for his attacks, once spending an entire year isolated from society playing a game for hours on end.
Once again implying the year spent playing games (playing wow) was a year spent preparing for the attack which is untrue.

“Of course I couldn’t tell her I was going to take a sabbatical because I am going to blow myself up in five years’ time. During that year I played perhaps 16 hours a day. It was a lot. Only playing for an entire year — playing and sleeping, playing and sleeping….It was a dream I had, and I wanted to do this.”
Proximity of the sentences onces again tries to enforce the relationship between blowing himself up and playing games for a year.

When he acquired the weapons for the actual attacks, he turned to Norse mythology in naming them.
All of this talk about games and yet only a single sentence about the actual weapons (some legal some illegal) he used to carry out these attacks and no mention of the hours upon hours he spent firing them and ACTUALLY training to use them in firing ranges.

... So do you still think that article was fair and unbiased?

Who cares what this fucktard has to say? When I listen or acknowledge what someone who has killed what is it, almost 70 people, then please put me out of my misery. This guys does not deserve one milisecond of anymore media publicity. Chuck him in jail, hang him, whatever, but most importantly, forget him.

There. Funny how guilty always gets the larger end of the stick compared to the victim(s)

They're using WoW to ready themselves for mass murders now? Seriously?

I smell a Fox News special incoming.

If it was just Fox I wouldn't have bothered to comment, but it's not unfortunately and considering we are a gaming community site I feel it's our responsibility to put more consideration into the topic before just repeating the mass media sentiment.

*yes yes I know this wasn't a myg article and just a repost, but still*

I seen the article said he played WOW for 16 Hours a day in 2006 and also played Modern Warfare, I fail to see how playing a game with people shooting back at you is in any way practise for running around shooting unarmed people. Now Duck Hunt on the other hand is exactly the kinda of game you would need to get practice for that kinda of thing.

An as for WOW I didn't read any where about him healing, tanking or shouting LEEEEERRRRRROOOOOOYYYYY! But then maybe he was just goldfarming.

No where in there did I read how he left-clicked people to death. So WoW did nothing.

This guy would be a violent lunatic regardless of what he played. I am getting quite tired of everything that is awesome being blamed for turning people crazy (games, movies, metal, etc). These people were crazy long before they started gaming.

Here is an extract from what Penn Jillette reckons about video games motivating people to kill others:

We did our defending a videogame show. You know, I was about time; it had been on our list for a while. It just seems to be such prominent bulls***. With anything that kids like, there is some a**hole that will come along and take it down. Same argument has been used for comics, and rock 'n roll, and everything.

Ah gosh, I just laugh at these kind of articles. Absolutely ridiculous.

The problem however is "the world" dont see it that way.
The next COD will only feature bubble guns now, and rainbow ponies if the bloody US senate and all the other global powers have their way. Thanks to the 0.0000000001% of the world population whose parents were on LSD during birth.

The face of Anders Behring Breivik, my friends, is the face of the enemy!!

America won't change anything with games. Cod is a good properganda tool.
