Guild Wars 2

How many character slots are there per server?

There is 5 character slots in total. It's not server specific. After you filled all 5 you can delete and make another or purchase some from the in game store.

W-T-F???

I cant get my Free 2000 gems because I DON'T have a credit card...

How are you guys finding the beta now?
I found that if you are in a party and want to stay on the same server, sometimes one gets overflowed and the other doesn't - just try and try again. After about 3-4 times I managed to get through with my party.

D and I just queue. Takes about 5-minutes or so, but at least it's guaranteed. Only thing then is when your story takes place in an instance. After leaving the instance you get taken back to the world and, often, aren't in the same world instance.

I have to say, I really thought that they were going to do away with this "one server, many servers" nonsense when they said they intended to have a persistent world and multiple "home servers."

So much for that.

All the same it's an okay game but "events" are repeated for the benefit of the majority every 10 or so minutes and I'm already tired of seeing the same shit playing out again and again and again and again. Combat is hardly as dynamic and fluid as we were led to believe: at best, we can dodge once or twice every minute or so and run around while casting spells and attacking instead of staying in place.

What does make this game extraordinary is its art direction: it's absolutely beautiful, although character customisation is still far too limited--hopefully it'll be expanded on it at release.

The one thing I am quite fond of is that there's no "kill-stealing" any more or "ZOMG U STEAL MY THING." Very smart and progressive move for an MMO.

I'm happy to play it and keen to invest time in it. But revolutionary? Meh. Not by my standards.

I think I'll wait until release before I bother playing again. The starting bits are going to get stale and lose their flavour very quickly otherwise.

Some things I think that will change for the final release:

1. Servers will definitely be upgraded. The current amount of physical resources is inadequate and Arenanet won't chance the servers bombing out like they are now.
2. They will look at the feedback on events and I reckon they will change them or add them as to have a wider variety of events.
3. Trading systems... every MMO has this... I think it's just not been added yet.

I do love the "each person gets his own stuff and XP". It's a brilliant idea.

IIRC They did say that each zone would have a wide variety of event's so that each play through is as diverse as possible, however what I think they're doing now atm is looping as few as possible chains and then bug testing the hell out of those, then as the weekends progress they'll add or change them round till everything is at release level.

The only revolutionary aspect that I have read of so far is the no holy trinity, anyone tested that out yet? I also read that there are no dungeons for this beta yet, guess we have to wait and see how the breaking of the holy trinity will operate in a dungeon environment.

I hope so because I found that there weren't really enough events, particularly in the human starter area, by level 11 I ran out of level appropriate things to do.

I will say that this is the best MMO I've ever played but it does have its issues. There definitely needs to be more events because you run out of level appropriate heart quests fairly quickly.

Performance needs a serious boost, they did say this beta would be CPU bound and hopefully it's improved dramatically because it did make large group events less fun to play when you have a sub 20 framerate.

Other issues like groups being split up when switching instances is annoying but will definitely be fixed.

Elemetalist is definitely my profession of choice at this point. Once you get used to flicking through attunements to adapts to the situation it becomes so much fun. I also enjoyed the Guardian a lot and I'm quite surprised by how much healing he can do.

Next beta I won't play as long as this one, I'll just want to see what has changed and try out some other professions.

All in all I've come out very positive from this beta. The game is definitely not ready for prime time and I suspect at least two more beta events before final release, there's still a fair amount of work to be done.

Hard to say. As ele and guardian I could do healing, but not enough to say keep a "tank" alive for any real amount of time. From what I've played it looks like they definitely got rid of it and I expect dungeons to be skill dependent, you need to know your class and play it well.

I agree with the points Isengard made.

I didn't see any fps readings (I don't have my EVGA monitor installed either), but I'm pretty sure I'm pushing around 50-60fps. My CPU didn't go above 35% (running at stock atm) at any given time, nor > 1.2GB RAM.

You are likely right there Prophet. Pity the game isn't optimised to use 4 cores because it peaked at 50% usage.

35% on mine, seems to choose randomly between 1 - 4 cores.
Loving the XP and coin been given individually :D makes it way easier than 500+ people screaming mine! mine! mine! and looting it all.

I can see that they've done away with the trinity inasmuch as there is no dedicated tank/healer/support mechanism - which is great because it doesn't force a group to wait for 30 minutes for a cleric or a tank to rock up and join the party.

On the other hand, from what I've seen in events so far, once you walk into dungeons there's going to have to be a ton of teamwork going on - at this point it seems that the Elementalist and Guardians have the best group healing abilities. So those aspects are still there, they're just not locked in stone.

I'm loving my Elementalist because I'm able to switch between pure DPS and Support as the situation demands - it's very similar to the way I played my Chanter in Aion, so it's not a huge jump for me. For those who are used to playing pure classes there may need to be some adaptation.

As Lycan said earlier - it's not all totally revolutionary although ANet did bring a lot of new things to the table. It's a breath of fresh air, which is something the MMO genre needs - although I'm starting to think GW2 might be my last MMO - as much as I enjoyed playing this weekend and as much as I look forward to what's coming I've reached the point where I'm starting to become a little jaded.

Or maybe I just need a break :)

I think there are some things that are not going to change in a MMO, they are in Guild Wars 2 but they made it much more bearable, and fun to do, killing 10 drakes is not just killing 10 drakes the conventional way, find 10 drakes, tank them, heal yourself and repeat, it's now jumping around, dodging attacks healing, casting and killing, when more players join it gets tougher.

I have yet to get into trading, crafting, dyes, pvp and everything else but I liked what I saw this weekend. I will be spending 1000+ hours when it launches, also will buy the expansions (if any are made) and buying stuff from the in game store (when I get a credit card).

I think (and this applies to all genres of gaming) that it's best to always try to be as sceptical as possible. I'm not saying be downright pessimistic but it's exceedingly rare that anyone in the industry takes extreme risks. And even when they have extreme ideas, they tend to implement them in far less extravagant ways.

Often, if you adjust your expectations to something a bit more grounded, you enjoy it that much more when you experience it for yourself.

The beta was a good indication of what to expect and it does enough differently to not be "just another MMO" and that's good enough for me.

Also, the fact that it's mostly a once-off purchase means there's not really much to lose.

It's a good game and it may just inspire other MMO devs to try experiment a bit more and be as progressive.

Unfortunately, the number of cut-and-paste generic MMOs out there pretty much killed the genre for me. Even Secret World, a game that looks incredibly promising, I couldn't care less about because I don't trust MMO developers any more. I prefer taking the "wait and see" approach.

However, the first time I logged into GW2, I was bouncing on my chair and cheering to my heart's content :p So I had big hopes too :D

Now, however, I am sick to death of the fucking login screen and its music.

I loved it and I am going to love it at full release with all the bugs ironed out. Just the sheer size of the world is mind boggling. So many things to do and so little time.

The event system works, a little repetitive in the starting areas but I expected as much. With that said though I still experienced a lot of many different events every time I played.

I like the more traditional items and gameplay, the melee fighting was awkward at first but after some practice it was fun as hell.

I will be playing thief, the amount of combos and looky-loos you can pull off with that class is great. Expect to see me in-game a lot or all the time - GF permitting of course.

Yeah it was quite fun hey.The combo's were great.
The big fights where you'd kill Wurms or those other bigass monsters were fun, although tiring and difficult - at level 15, killing a level 19 monster (Wayfarer Foothills -> up in the snowy mountains), took 15 minutes (with 30-40 of us) last night... then in my party we did it twice :D

I enjoyed playing myself, but did not realy play, because don't feel like spoiling the quest lines, so i just went and did some WVW and some PVP, had some fun their though :P

Only things that annoys me currently is no FPS/Latency/Time meters and can't see your own name, and then the party thing where you never in the same overflow server.. but thats going to be fixed so not to worried on that.
