ChessConquest - official discussion thread

Welcome to the forum Muerte... looks like you've rallied enough support for your no-name-changing request. Will change profile editing on ChessConquest accordingly.

Does this mean my name is going to revert back to BongWaterEnema (because the new policy would inherently make your display name the same as your username)? I'd prefer not...

How about allowing a single, final name change? This seems to be the most fair response to the situation.

I'd also like to report a bug in one of the tournament games. I (Antediluvian) was lined up against gicuta37, and we both won a single game. The tie-breaker turned out to be a draw (KvK situation), but then instead of a 4th tie-breaker, it gave gicuta37 a score 2 and myself a score of 1 (instead of the presumed 1.5 each).

Game id's as proof: 1st game, 2nd game, 3rd game.

I'd really like to get another shot at him, if at all possible.

I'll look into what happened here Vixe, and get back to you...

I agree that an username and a player name sometimes need to be different. How about this...

First time a user signs up, their player name is automatically set to the username. He/she can then change his/her player name once (and I'll add a confirm input to prevent spelling mistakes). Thereafter the player name cannot be changed again.

I agree that this would be the best solution.

And I just happened to notice another glitch, which might relate to the bug I experienced with the drawn game in the tournament. On my profile it says that I have 1 draw with white, and 1 draw with black, but then the total games drawn says 1. Very strange... Perhaps these issues lie behind the the fact that it was a draw due to invalid checkmate pieces, which probably doesn't occur too often. Just a guess.

Edit: I changed my avatar, but the change is only reflecting on my profile. When I comment during a game, or appear under "recent winners" on the home page, it still shows my old avatar. How long does it take until it gets updated?

Edit#2: I'd like to recommend an added bit of info on a player's profile. Next to the number after "Wins with White/Black", could you please include in parentheses the number of games played with that colour. e.g.: Wins with White: 54 (of 68). In this way it is more apparent which colour a player is more skilled with.

As far as I can remember, the image is cached in your browser so if you just do a proper refresh in your browser, that should do the trick.

I've tried an "ignore cache refresh" on the chessconquest page, to no avail. Right clicking on my avatar image, and opening the image URL, I still saw my old avatar. I did a clear cache refresh on that page, and then the correct one loaded. But returning to chessconquest still shows the old one. Perhaps it's cached on my machine by Java, and not my browser? I wouldn't know if that's possible or not.

Edit: no longer an issue.

Will look into this...

This is not a problem with the browser but rather a server caching issue. I used to previously have Avatar pictures update in realtime, but this decreased the system's performance a lot. Avatar pictures are therefore cached. When you change your avatar picture it takes a while to update, but it will eventually update. (Not to sure how long it takes though)

Nice idea. Added it to the development task list.

Vixe, I've verified your games, and rolled back the tournament round. I apologize for only getting back to you know, but this was one of those weeks where "Time available" was much less than "Time required to complete all tasks.".

I'm yet to track down why this happened in the first place, but you should be able to continue with this tournament again.

I just received the email notification. Thanks, I appreciate your time spent on the issue.

Yotta, how do you feel about players with multiple accounts? Not the ones necessarily being used for point-boosting, but the ones that join every tournament on each account that they have.

I already believe that 4 of the top 5 Romanian players are actually one person (ronicu43, tica45, gicuta37, naita48). I say this due to the similarity in names, ratings, wins/losses, and most importantly, in the games I played against gicuta and ronicu, the one kept logging in directly after the other logs off. Constantly.

Also, Daniel and elis (ranked 4th and 8th on Romanian players) are also the same person. If you look at the games played between them (all tournament games), they are complete walk-over checkmates, normally in 4-6 moves.

I feel there needs to be some measure against this, because it's just blatantly unfair. I mean, if you're fortunate enough to beat ronicu in a tournament, chances are you'll face him again in a round or two. Perhaps 1 tournament entry per IP? If at all possible...

I'd be surprised if it had not been. A search of the thread reveals many posts over a long time that make mention of it, but I'm not prepared to go through all of it (I've got chess to play, damnit!). But the crux of my post is about the multiple tournament entries - has the issue been brought up before? Can my suggestion of an IP restriction be implemented?

I need to apologise for giving up on several games last night. My personal situation remains difficult. In a moment of crisis I simply resigned every game in which I had the move. I did not resign the others because AFAIK you cannot resign when it is not your move. This has had the unexpected consequence that I now have what seems to be a manageable set of games under my current circumstances.

I shall therefore continue in the remainder of my games as best as I can. Thank you for your understanding.

I believe that we should have a statement that multi-accounting is against the rules, and that the punishment for breaching the rule is banning. Purely as an example to show that in chess this is an issue, chess.com has the following statement:
http://support.chess.com/Knowledgebase/Article/View/15/6/can-i-have-multiple-accounts

I found an interesting discussion on how to catch cheaters at http://gamedev.stackexchange.com/qu...andle-multiple-accounts-creation-and-cheating, which includes an enlightening opinion on the value of using multiple accounting as a way of inflating ratings in chess.

However, sometimes the use of identical IPs fails when multiple members of the same household use the same computer: Vuade and Muerte, take a bow. Funtrivia (see http://www.funtrivia.com/cheating.cfm) try to address this issue, although I am not sure that their approach can be followed exactly.

I propose that Yotta should simply declare any game that appears to have been manipulated to be unrated, withdraw all rewards from such games, and warn participants that their behaviour is unacceptable. Further infractions of this rule should be followed by banning.

Vix, the Romanian players have been discussed at length earlier one this thread ;)

I do not think multiple accounts is a good thing. When a player spreads their activity across multiple accounts their stats is scewed and not a true representation of the player's performance.

I suppose part of the problem why cheating is so easy, is because ChessConquest does not require email authentication. This makes it easy for a player to create multiple accounts. When we did the original research on good and bad practices to be applied to an online community website, it became apparent that the sign-up process needs to be super quick and easy. This was the motivation why we decided to do way with email authentication.

However, current circumstances motivates me that email authentication should be part of the sign up process.

If you guys can give me some time to gather my thoughts. I've reviewed all the suggestions made in the past 5 months with regards to eliminating cheating from the website, and want to come up with an elegant solution that prevents players from cheating.

The problem with just making a policy is that it still doesn't prevent a cheater from cheating. I think there needs to be a coded solution that forces the rule of "no-cheating-allowed".
