ChessConquest - official discussion thread

...sometimes the use of identical IPs fails when multiple members of the same household use the same computer: Vuade and Muerte, take a bow.

Luckily I have firsthand knowledge that Vaude is an IT guru, and won't have any problems setting up unique IPs. ;)

Hey Yotta

email authentication won't solve your issue. Take user Ranex for example. I was paranoid that I got caught out, and used a different email for it - one of the MANY email addresses I use. (Not to mention how easy it is just to quickly create one for the purpose)

I haven't had a chance to read through all tallfred's links yet - maybe there are more elagant solutions. I mean even if you use some sort of hardware ID to uniquely identify a suer - nothing prevents them from loggin in on their PC with one account, and another on their smartphone.

And how do you ever conclusively prove that 2 users are the same person? Let Fritz analyse each and every game and alert you whenever it sees the strength of a player is too close to another? That is also not conclusive. I'll read through some of tallfred's links

Hey Tallfred - care for a quick game? I won't mind if you resign after the first move :-p (was wondering wth was up with you - thanks for the explanation)

The problem with just making a policy is that it still doesn't prevent a cheater from cheating. I think there needs to be a coded solution that forces the rule of "no-cheating-allowed".

The reason for the policy is for you to have a basis to take action. If the policy is in place no on can say, "I did not know," or "You are acting autocratically." By signing on to the site, users will be agreeing to abide by a set of allowed behaviours and not to do unwanted acts.

As a technologist that has sen a lot of fraud at first hand, I can assure you that there is no technology on the planet that can prevent cheating. Vuade's concerns are spot on. Technology can make it more difficult, and the price of the technology is vaguely related to the difficulty that is added, but technology does not solve the root problem: man's desire to get an advantage. Add to that the lengths to which people will go, and it seems self-defeating to rely on some computer to solve our problems.

I suggest that you investigate complaints of bad behaviour from members and take swift, decisive action. In this way you have something that technology will never give you: hundreds of intelligent, vigilant eyes that are on your side. As Abe Lincoln said, "You can fool some of the people some of the time, but you can bullshit a computer whenever you like." Or something to that effect.

Vuade sees opportunity here: I obligingly resigned to his wife in an even position after donating a Bishop to her cause in the other game of the same tournament. No wonder that he is aching to have a go at me.

OK Vuade, let's see if you can gain some rating points off the dinosaur :)

hehe u got me. cool let's go. unfortunately I'm in a bit of a slump at the moment - so I don't have high hopes

Thanks for that so by the way :-) I'm now almost at Vuade's ranking- as it SHOULD be! ;-)

I was wondering how many of the people who post only ChessConquest related posts here do other kinds of gaming too. Do you and Vuade do any other kind of gaming Muerte?

Hi Solitude- nope we don't do other gaming. Firstly there is the TIME problem, and then there is the problem that once I start playing any kind of game I get hooked. Like crazy- so I rather just not go there... To give you an example at university I got addicted to Mah-jong (spelling??) (well ok during exam times - amazing how everything gets interesting then) :-)

...everything except the studies ;) I think I obtained my masters degree in Quake with all the time invested into learning the strategies of first-person-shooters during exam times.

I want to run something pass you guys...

We've been getting some complaints that some players become a bit aggressive when their opponents doesn't move instantly against them, and starts cursing their opponents.

What do you guys think if we added a "swearing-filter" that automatically converts curse words to "@%$@#!"?

I havent experienced that, but seeing as there is not age restriction on the site, I would support the swearing filter.

I haven't experienced that either, then again I generally make moves quite fast. I htink its a good idea to censor swear words. The chat is not for that kind of thing.
As Vixe knows, its for sending links to smack talk gifs :D

Well... I suppose the filter will only work in English.
fanard cursed me once because I didn't want to play... I didn't understand any of the words so had to do a very complicated google search before I could get insulted (google translate got me nowhere)... and even then, I didn't really care enough to actually be insulted :)

I don't think a filter for swear words is the solution. It is just to difficult to implement. Why not let the player choose if they want to enable chat or not. So then just disable your chat feature for the game. The same goes for under age players. If a player is under age disable the chat option permanently. I think this could be a simple solution for the problem?

MouseWarrior also suggested a chat block/unblock feature. Together with Vaude adding a +1, and thinking a bit about it, the chat blocking feature makes much more sense.

Thanks guys.

I really dislike the idea of censorship, so if something needs to be implemented, I'm all for a "disable chat" button.
