I have an ASUS GTX 580 CUII 1.5gb and want to sli with a MSI 580 3gb twinforzer I think it is called, Firstly is this doable and secondly will a 850Watt PSU pull both with 2 HDD and the normal USB goodies plugeed into ones PC?

Running 2600k I7 with 8Gb HyperMax Ram.

Firstly, creating a thread compared to a pm will mean everybody answers not just The Joker lol. Joker is pretty good with replying to pm's so don't worry about that lol.
Are you wanting the MSI one to be the main gpu and the Asus to be the slacker, should help since the 3gb memory.
And lastly what psu are you running?

oh, and it shouldn't be a problem... as far as I know.

Yeah more than one opinion is always good. It is a no name-Commander PSU with seperate cables(forgot waht that is called lol) But it has high Amp outputs if I remember correctly.

jip with the Asus as the slacker

:D

1st things 1st Yeah It'll work with a regitery tweak as far as i know mate, unfortunately you'll end up only using 1.5GB of the 3GB card and it'll also downlock to the 1.5GB card's clocks. So you'll still only have 1.5GB vid memory.

If I was in you're position..I would do the following.

Sell the 1.5GB card and only run the 3GB card.
Sell the 1.5GB card and get yourself a GTX680 (40% faster than a single 580)

If you really want to go the sli route I would opt for going with 2x 1.5GB cards.
Sli and Crossfire always seem to have little issues. I know i've used many sli and cf options.
So make sure before you decide what you want to do.

As for the PSU. 850w Should be good enough if its a good quality psu, so which psu are you running? If its a no name brand..I would not recommend it.

I always believe a single fast card is the best way to go.

I don't think there would be a problem then, however if you are buying the MSI card, I do hope its for a good price as it may be better to consider selling your current 580, and get a 680 instead to later crossfire that. The 680 is plenty powerful to handle anything you throw at it for a long time plus the power draw is a lot less

Damnit Joker, you beat me to it, and damn customers causing me to slow down lol :)

Thx for the advice.

Maybe I might run the 3Gb for a while till the 680's have been proven.

@czc yeah its modular
