Telkom confirms free ADSL speed upgrades

Good news for the 384Kers, but is the grid read for this?

Been wondering the exact same thing. I suspect that there may be a heavier strain on the grid and that AUPs will adapt to be a little stricter in their throttling and shaping could be readjusted.

But then again since these upgrades will only be taking place on exchanges that are 10mbps enabled so I doubt it's going to add too much strain to the grid. But like I said, the issue will lie with ISPs and their load management, but that shouldn't be too much of an issue if Telkom is confident that the grid will be able to handle the upgrade. But I'm going to rather ride it out with my capped account and see how things go and maybe in the new year consider going uncapped.

Where did you hear that? Last I heard, this is being rolled out across the board. If your exchange can handle the upgrades, it's getting it, and there are few upgrades that can't handle at least 2mb/s.

It'll be fine. They don't say so, but I'm pretty sure it'll only be the new MSAN exchanges that get upgrade. Not all of them are upgraded yet...hence the phased portion.

Hence why I said that only the 10 meg capable exchanges will first see this. The older exchanges won't be able to handle the upgrade since you'll be increasing their work load and most are already saturated as they stand. Not 100% certain about this, but someone somewhere pointed out that this is only taking place in selected areas but can't quite find the article/forum post. Seriously have to bookmark this kind of s**t for myself in future >.<

But yeah, it only makes sense if they are aiming these upgrades at MSAN or low congestion exchanges first and then as older exchanges are upgraded they could still carry implementing the upgrades all across the board. I'll try and dig out some more info about the exact nature of the upgrades though I see this taking the same route as the 4 meg to 10 meg upgrades. Only a small group of people get their full promise and the rest of us sit syncing at barely 4 megs with heavy noise on our lines .-.
