Smart people surviving would more likely be true for Alien invasion than Zombie Apocalypse.

Zombie Apocalypse FTW. Also, I want to be at work when it breaks out. I work in a shopping mall and I've played a shitload of Dead Rising 2, so I'll be ready. :p

I think we all want to have a mini-zombie-apocalypse to happen, so that we can fire some large caliber or rapid fire weapons... but in reality, it will be a dirty place. Aliens on the other hand, would probably have some kind of a doomsday weapon to wipe us all out without knowing.

So I would not like either, but prefer the Zombie apocalypse (provided I can get a fuckload of ammo and weapons beforehand.)

Zombie apocalypse. After watching Zombieland, I think that it could actually be fun. I think this should have been a poll, just so we can see how many people really want zombies

I really depends on the severity of either incident.

The zombie presence revolves around an infection - so it's directly and continuously destructive to humans.

Aliens, while their arrival will likely be heavily destructive in general, it will unlikely be directly destructive - depending on their purpouse.

Firstly, the idea that "they would already be here" if they wanted our resources is flawed, just as a group of fishermen in the first century would argue that other humans in the world wouldn't just want their resources, as they would already be there.

Secondly, the idea that they could be rationalized with, and intelligent, is also flawed - because we are creating proxies of ourselves. The vast majority of the time, we are forced to create proxies of things we already know, for things we can't know. A society that has never seen plants - has lived entirely off fauna, would never be able to understand, imagine, or even predict them, because they wouldn't fit any proxy that the society could create. Beyond that, if they COULD be rationalized, it would be as a wolf attempting to rationalize with woodcutters and poachers, or natives with aggressive harvester colonists (ie, they'd "spare" us, but we'd be a tiny unhealthy, unhappy minority) The only way it could happen would be if mutual symbiosis could be achieved (see - Combine in Half Life 2). At very least, we'd be akin to an infant complaining to an adult, when that adult.

So, we have three basic ideas of why we may be "visited". Resources, domination, relay.

Resources: Just as one may kick away an ants nest to get to a water vein underneath, you don't go around killing every single ant. The ants scatter, join up with the other colony relays, and as a species they survive. Naturally, this depends widely on what resources they are hunting for (unlikely its water, it's one of the most common elements within the galaxy). If the creatures are more instinctive (space whales, etc), they will adapt to us, as we will adapt to them. Our entire ecology will suffer horribly, but life goes on.

But if they are hunting for biological matter, then, well, it depends on their process. If they look to invade, and manufacture, we could surive. If they look to feed (see - Tyranids in 40k), we're dead in a horrible but short process.

Domination:As stated, based on the naive (and, to be honest, somewhat arrogant) assumption that aliens will be a proxy of us, our mentality, and our technological process. It would be highly likely they would either quickly absorb as us a workforce to either be quickly expended or mass produced. We'd survive depending (again, see - Combine in Half Life 2).

Relay: Pretty much like us jumping onto an island, clearing away a patch of forest, and building a giant satellite dish. Naturally destroying the habitat in the immediate area, instilling protective measures around it, but otherwise leaving the rest of the island alone.

So, basically, the lethality of such an invasion swings widely depending on what they want, and what they are. Then again, one can only approach such a concept with human mentality, so it's naturally possible nothing I've said, nor anything anyone else has said, applies :P

BUT, with the zombie apocalypse you're looking at a constant theme of failure, no one survives except a barren few, who even then slowly drop off. While the planets ecology won't be overly phased, us as a species is reduced to a tiny fraction.

Realistically, we have pretty amazing containment procedures, so I rather doubt it would lead to such a worldwide catastrophe - unless, of course, we're seeing the virus spread across our atmosphere from space, in which case it would arguably be an alien invasion as well (see - Biomega manga).

So, we have an Alien invasion where our survival is completely unkown, a thematic zombie apocalypse where we all die, or a realistic zombie incident where many die, but likely contained.

Well I think I would have to go with alien invasion to be honest. I don't think I could decapitate somebody infected especially if I knew them when they were not undead.
With aliens well I have no problem launching all out assault on them

I think I could behead a loved one, once you become a zombie you're dead to me :p

For fear of reviving an (un)dead post ... you guys have overlooked the possibility of a zombie-like-alien invasion. Think along the lines of "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" ... the Pod People. Those guys didn't have to do much to have us wiped out; we just had to fall asleep and a pod would clone us and we'd be gone. That's a tad more freaky than a Zombie Apocalypse (which arguably is going to be loads of fun; for mostly the wrong reasons) or a big-headed brainiac alien invasion.

Just try to stay awake for more than a week and you'll realise the whole planet is doomed. Zombies are relentless in their slow pursuit of every piece of flesh they can get their hands on but they'll take time to hunt us all down, and in some cases we'll be safe enough hiding away in our bunker in Tibet. Smart aliens will probably also struggle to find every survivor (at least, that's what Hollywood tells us). Pod People on the other hand? They just need to wait for us to fall asleep O_O
