The makers of Ouya, the low-cost video game console based on Google's Android OS and designed by Yves Behar, have already surpassed their $950,000 fundraising goal on Kickstarter. The project, a $99 game console and controller that aims to adapt the mobile app business model for the TV, was officially unveiled earlier today. It took just 8 hours and 14 minutes for Ouya to reach its goal.

Kickstarter backers quickly snapped up 1,000 "early bird" Ouya consoles at $95 a pop, which the company expects to begin shipping in March 2013. More than 5,000 additional consoles were pre-purchased at $99, with another hundred sold to prospective developers.

"We were totally psyched to reach our goal at 2pm," said Ouya CEO and founder Julie Uhrman in a statement to Polygon. "It took us 7 months to raise a little bit of investment from generous friends and family, and we raised the rest on Kickstarter in 8 hours. We are just floored.

"We thank the more than 7,600 backers who have supported us so far, and the rest yet to come. The next 29 days are about raising the bar: how much can we change things? We're going to hang on tight for the ride!"

Ouya's Kickstarter fundraising drive has another 29 days to go. Kickstarter project tracking site Kicktraq currently has the Android game console trending upwards of $29 million.

The Tegra 3-powered Ouya is attempting to differentiate itself from its console competitors by promoting free-to-play games and hack-friendly access to its hardware and OS. For more on Ouya, read our story on the hopeful console video game console.

Wow! That's impressive... BRB, coming up with my own hare-brained scheme to launch on Kickstarter.

Damn, less than a day for R8mil, shitz!

@James If my memory serves, the person who is designing the console designed either the original xbox or the xbo360, so he's not just some noob. :)

I have one question: What is the most annoying part of free apps on iOS and Android mobile devices?

Yup. Ads. Curious to see how they'll work around that.

Ads. Well for me an anyway.

Im sure someone will create an app to block it on this console.

Yep those damned ads and games that force you to use Microtransactions due to Power Creep. Ads are how the studios that release free titles make most of their $$$. If advertisers know that say 70% of people are just blocking the ads then they may stop paying to advertise in app as they are not getting the exposure they are paying for. Im not saying it will happen but I think we should all remember Gaming history is Strewn with the corpses of failed Consoles....

I will keep an open mind and see what happens come release.

I don't see why it has to only be free to play games, why can't I just play the games I've already bought?

Ive never owned any android devices but I have owned a million consoles and yes alot of them failed. Like Sega ones that I was a big fan of them but somehow they always lost to the competition :( even thou there games rawked!!

I'm curious to see what this little guy will do in the wild. There will be some kick-ass mods, you can bet.

This thing is the end of traditional consoles. Not right away, but this is the first step.
Yeah until you can play Mass Effect X or Metal Gear Solid Y on an android device this is no-where close to being the end of consoles.

I don't think EA takes Android quite as seriously as it should. However, this console could change all that.

NOVA 3 is pretty good. I have it on my Galaxy S III. Its basically a Crysis-like FPS. A bit awkward on a touch-screen only device but it would play like a dream on Ouya.

Yeah except Nova will look like horse shit when blown up to the resolution of a entry level LCD tv.

The question has never been can games be made for android, with powerful engines like Unity and Unreal easily running on iOS and Android platforms games will be made for it. The difference is that most mobile titles like NOVA is about the quarter of the size of an actual game. And sure at first people wont mind since its free but eventually it the novelty will wear off people will want their big budget 120 hour epics back. The F2P games that have made a success both on mobile platforms like Android and iOS or on PC/Console all have one thing in common, they rely heavily on Micro transaction and very few of these titles manage the issue of Micro transaction correctly, with most of them having to actually fork out and get some of the stuff via the micro transactions interface. Why is it that titles like DDOU, Star Trek Online, Black Light Retribution, Lord of the Rings Online have all faded into the background? because eventually the novelty wears off. Big boom in users at the time of F2P and then the pool slowly drains until only a few puddles remain.

I already play it at 720p. It looks fine.

Wut? Allow me to introduce you to a nation called CHINA where there are more F2P MMO's (and players) than you could care to imagine...

On what pray tell do you play it at 720p?

And on what do those people play their F2P titles and where do they play it?
