Why you should buy an SSD (Column)

Then you'll always be waiting for prices to drop...
Not quite. Prices will always be dropping sure, but at the moment its dropping fairly fast & more importantly, the capacities are increasing faster than the need for space.

e.g. In my case I know I need 512gb ideally. That would mean I can put everything except media onto the SSD. My requirements might change perhaps +15% in the next year (e.g. new steam game), but the capacities SSD available for any given price will definitely increase >15%. Given current trends probably more like 100%. So I'll probably wait until 512gb hits the current 256gb price.

So while I do agree with the always waiting sentiment, I think SSDs are a special case in that it can, for some people, make sense to wait a bit.

Best monies I ever spent! You run ONLY windows and apps you use very often, like office and keep the rest of your shyte on a internal drive. Works like a dream!

Loving my 240gb sandisk extreme, enough space for windows and all the games etc. Why wait? If you need more space you could always get another.

What about the whole maximum write cycles? What sort of MTBF would you be looking at?

This is something I would also want more info on, this is one of the reason I have been reluctant to upgrade. I heard the life span on an SSD is quite short, not that I need it longer than 2 years cause I dont keep the same drive long. I have tons of info that flies through my operating system drive and if i could get a definitive answer I will get an SSD tomorrow if it works for me.

Other issue is I have no Bays for a 2.5" drive to fit, how the hell does that work (yep I know dumb question but I like knowing everything before committing to something these days, made that mistake before costed me more money in the end than I planned).

Thanks if anyone responds.

I would suggest buying one quickly, before another earthquake or flood drives the prices up to unaffordable amounts again!

I really wouldn't say the life span is short, it will last you a good few years without any issues. There are some do's and don't though when running a SSD. Typically you will disable defrag on the drive as this will shorten the life span, however on Windows 7 it will automatically disable defrag on the drive as soon as it detect that you have a SSD installed. Also you NEVER run benchmark tests on a SSD, this also has a adverse effect on the lifespan. Some guys want to see how great their read / write speeds are and end up killing the drive in no time because of these benchmarks.

You get special brackets for SSD's and it fits perfectly into a normal drive bay. Some drives come with these brackets whilst my OCZ didn't so I had to buy one but I think it was like R30.

Hope that helps :)

I have mine sticky taped to the top of my drive cage "whistling:

But seriously, if you run any production software like Adobe products, it highly recommend it. However, it can't match the sheer thrill and pleasure of dropping cash on a new graphic card, CPU or peripheral. IMHO.

Cost (rand per GB) just doesn't make it worth while for me. I want to buy two SSD drives at the end of this year, but I'll have to see how much prices have dropped by then.

Using the normal bay and just screwing one side in works just fine

Thanks for the replies, think I shall give this a try. And I barely run benchmarks these days, I don't find the use anymore. And thanks for letting me know you do get a bracket that makes it fit fine. That was one on my main concerns. I am going to definitely order one of these this week. :)
