Port Authority: Darksiders 2 PC

The Joker

Thread Killer MKII
We're trying something a little different here. Typically, we reserve Port Authority for games that took their sweet time in making their way over to PC. But, since we got our hands on Darksiders 2 on PC late last week, we haven't had time to do a complete review in time for you day-one buyers to make your decisions. So, considering there are some significant issues with the Darksiders 2 PC version, we're doing a special Port Authority to make sure you have the info you need to know before you buy.

Graphic Settings

Are you serious? That's it?

We've got the bare minimum of effort here, folks. Vertical sync, a gamma slider, resolution, and the option to play in full-screen or windowed mode. No texture settings, no antialiasing, no field of view (admittedly not a big issue in a third-person game), no nothing. Best of all, if you change the resolution you have to restart. Awesome.

However, there might be more settings under the hood. According to the Darksiders 2 Community Manager, there is a .config file that allows for additional graphics tweaks -- but I haven't been able to find it yet. Yes, I was looking for hidden files as well. We've also been told that Darksiders 2 has DirectX 11 support, but as stated once again by the Darksiders 2 Community Manager, that it is "not making use of any specific features within the DX11 technology." In other words, it's DX11 in name only.

What a joke...

Restart after changing the resolution? Can't remember the last time I did that.

Yip...its actually really tardy...they're doing as little as possible for the pc port...
I won't buy this anymore..Will get it from my mate once he is done jamming it.

Well that's just kak!! Talk about a direct console port with............... well nothing added as a benefit towards PC users :wtf:

If you take into account that Darksider 1 didn't exactly sell like hot cake and the precarious financial situation THQ is in this is hardly surprising. Dumping valuable resources into 1 version of the game with no guarantee of a proportional return would not be good business sense for the bankrupt publisher.

Well, wasn't it much the same with Darksiders 1? Can't remember any elaborate graphical tweaks there.

Then again, THQ isn't exactly well-known for their 'excellent' PC ports.

I know it a fancy PC only Collectors Edition:

Oh ok yeh I suppose you're right, I mean they should seriously start considering everyone when it comes to porting etc...

apparently this sequel is not a very good game according to most reviews i've read

I've hear & read the opposite. Gametrailers, Gameinformer & the Escapist review was quiet good and made me, a huge critic of the original, want to play no 2.

Metacritic says that each edition holds a critical review above 80 and all but the PC version holds a User score of above 8.

Mine arrives on Tuesday so I'll see then.

Darksiders 1 didn't run very badly it was just quite tedious.

1 was a bit tedious yeah.

The thing is, all those extra goodies doesn't really do you much good if you're stuck with a game that looks like ass. I've had quite a few experiences with PC ports in the past where the game doesn't recognise my hardware, and despite my PC being on the higher end of the performance spectrum, it defaults me to the lowest settings. Then I have to go dig through config files to just get the graphics up. From Dust is a prime example of this happening. In my friend's case, it defaulted his to higher settings than his PC could handle, leaving him with a game that was unplayably laggy.

I'll take a good port over a good collector's edition any day of the week.

Rage all over again... Graphics setting: on/off :p

Before I spent a cent on this one I'm going to try out one way or the other to make sure it isn't another tomb raider clone as the previous one was. I really didn't like DS1 especially the parts you need to train your shit by killing X with Z sometimes in Y mins, they really could have taken those out, which imho was only there to stretch game play. it brings nothing.

it was just quite tedious.
under statement. Yo itsa tombraider with das sword or das boomerang *erm*

Another one from a while ago: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/08/14/wot-i-think-darksiders-ii/

There’s some bad news too, I’m afraid. To call the port half-assed is an insult to chopped up donkeys everywhere. The graphics options are minimal, and the menus are utterly insane if negotiated with a mouse. In fact, you can’t go “back” with a mouse at any point, despite the buttons appearing on the screen. The game doesn’t even offer a “Start New Game” option, instead asking you to load one of three saved games, all blank obviously. And that’s after making sure you’ve been warned that it’s going to auto-save, and not to switch off your PC mid-save, every time you load it.

There’s no option to switch between keyboard/mouse and 360 controls, so if you want to play without your controller, you’re going to have to unplug it before you start the game. That’s just abysmal. Although honestly, despite there being adequate options for traditional PC controls, it’s a game obviously designed to be played on a pad, and I strongly recommend you do.

Meh, it's not optimal but seems more or less the same as the original Darksiders, that didn't exactly have many settings. Also saying 'it looks like ass' is a bit silly. It's still going to look better than console. The mouse menu navigation thing is a bit concerning but good thing I have no intention of using anything other than a gamepad.

Putting down the entire game for some technical issue is rather drastic.
